It has the makings for a great dog park; covered benches, concrete patio as well as the grassy area and a watering hole. But there is a major BUT: there must be so many dogs growing through that park that within 100 feet of the entrance or exit to that pet garden, you can smell the wretched stench of old dog urine and fecal disaster.

I start off most mornings with a walk around Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park. While I wish I was actually promenading through the park vs. around it, I go with my pup and dogs are not allowed in this beautiful, waterfront escape from the surrounding concrete jungle. Mega sad face. However — the park does include an exclusive space for our furry friends! If you walk toward the ferry terminal, you’ll find the pet garden which is located right next to the police station. It’s not the prettiest space, but it allows my Shar Pei to socialize with other dogs and romp around like a crazy man so he can get the exercise that he needs. There’s covered sitting space for the humans, which has definitely saved me from a few surprise downpours. Always pack an umbrella, along with a portable water bowl for your pup as there is a working water fountain. Protip: Not everyone picks up after their dogs, so proceed with caution when you walk across the grass to access the water fountain!

This park is located along the waterfront in Sheung Wan and allows one to get some breathing room from the nearby urban jungle. There is a nice sidewalk along the waterfront that is popular with joggers and romantic couples alike. One weekends the greenspace is typically filled with families out enjoying the weather. For dog owners, the park also houses a pet garden(dog park) located very close to the Macau Ferry Terminal building adjacent to the Central Police Station. Offering a fairly large section of grass surrounded by bushes, the garden has two water spigots and semi-covered seating for owners. Bring your own water bowl to fill up however, as your pooch will get thirsty. This is a favorite destination of our pug.

One of the newer parks in Hong Kong, Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park boasts a large lawn that can be used for weekend picnics and frisbee. The center of the lawn features a statue of Dr. Sun Yat Sen, the namesake of the park. The location of the park is where he meets with his comrades and loyalists since he cannot go back to the mainland. It is also the only the park in the entire city to be named after a Chinese figure, as most are named after foreign dignitaries(e.g. Blake Garden in Sheung Wan). What I like about this park best is the lawn — it’s refreshing to see vast, green space so close to the hustle and bustle of the city. It’s also tremendously easy to get to and is a full park with toilets, changing rooms, two basketball courts, a car park, a soccer pitch — you get the idea. The park is made from reclaimed land and maintenance is strictly implemented. It covers a whopping 4 hectares with historically prominent features that include the 5-bell Chime Tower, designed after the University of Hong Kong’s Main Building. Another great thing about the park, with the exception of the soccer pitch, is that it is open for the whole day. It truly feels like a «Central Park». Early evening strolls along the promenade make for a romantic and no-expense date, and also doubles as an alternative vantage point of Victoria Harbor. Overall, this is a great new addition to the parks in Hong Kong. It has only been in the city for four years but is fast becoming a tourist attraction.
