Definitely the best egg tart I’ve had — worth a journey to seek them out, especially if they’re still warm out of the oven. The store itself is tiny and easy to pass by. Do yourself a favor and stop in!

Hmmm. I like these egg tarts don’t get me wrong, BUT my fav are still the ones from Saint Honore.

The best egg tart that I’ve ever had in my entire life. What makes Tai Cheong’s egg tarts so special is the crust. Traditionally, egg tarts are encased in a flaky crust that crumbles when you bite into them, but Tai Cheong’s egg tarts come in a firm, cookie-​like crust that is more than capable of holding the sweet, creamy custard. I had to restrict myself to one egg tart because these things are damn addictive.

If you’re craving some fresh egg tarts that you know will taste good no matter which location you buy it from, you have to try Tai Cheong Bakery. They’re located all around Hong Kong and sell amazingly delicious egg tarts.
Even if you’re not aware that there’s a store selling egg tarts nearby, the delicious aroma from the bakery will be taken in and you’ll find your feet leading you to the store. Plus, the many Tai Cheong Bakery signs with pictures of enticing egg tarts are sure to get your attention.
I’ve been to a few different locations throughout Hong Kong and loved each egg tart I’ve gotten. Each one is about $ 1 USD, and if you come during a certain time, you’re able to score a discount on the egg tarts or pastry items. Tai Cheong sells bread, salted egg pastries, and other goodies, but seriously — you only need to get the egg tarts and you’ll be happy.
Egg tarts were a golden yellow and firm in the middle. The crust is slightly flaky, but has a similar texture of a cookie crust. These egg tarts are much taller in height as opposed to being wide, which means you get a lot more filling per egg tart. The filling is delicious — not too sweet, but still has that true egg taste. Taking a bite along with the crust — the best midday, morning, afternoon, nighttime snack.
Many of the Tai Cheong bakeries have these gigantic egg tart sculptures next to their storefront where you can take a picture with an egg tart. It’s amazing. Highly recommend you trying the egg tarts — especially when they’re fresh! But if they aren’t fresh, they’re still tasty.
Egg tarts sell out quickly! I still think the best egg tarts are from Gold Garden Café in HK. Kam Wah Café is a close second, and then I would rate Tai Cheong right after. I’m sure there are a lot more local mom and pop shops that have amazing egg tarts, but these three are seriously that good.

Definitely my favorite eggtart shop in Hong Kong! love it when it is fresh out of the oven. can even smell it on my way there. the egg isn’t too sweet, and the crust is crunchy just how i like it, would not make too much of a mess. I’m a more of a non－酥皮 eggtart lover so this is perfect for me!
Haven’t tried the other branches but the one in Lyndhurst is really great!

Somewhat overrated but if you are craving an egg tart near Central, you can head up the hill and stop by. This place was endorsed by the former governor of Hong Kong (pre-​1997).

They are the best egg tarts I’ve ever had. Even when I had out of town fam come to visit, I always bring them by here. It’s a crowd favorite for sure. However, I think I might have OD’d on them… I’m starting to find the crust a bit too buttery but if you have anything too much, you will always find an issue.
It’s still a 5 star because it’s going to be the best egg tart you will ever have if you haven’t tried them, and if you have, you will naturally gravitate back to this place every time you are in the area because it calls for you.
FYI They also don’t have the flakey crust.

Sweet, but not super sweet. The crust is a bit hard and crunchy, not flaky like other egg tart places. For $ 7 HKD, it was good.
The selections at this bakery were however very limited in both drinks and baked goods.
Convenient located near the pier and close to harbour city. I didn’t particularly like that the person had to pick something out of the egg tart before putting it into my bag. It bit too suspicious for my liking. Also the store is tucked away in the back, so it can be easy to miss if you’re not paying close attention. I’ll try other tai cheung bakeries, before I come back to this location.

Growing up, egg tarts were my favorite dim sum treat. I had heard that these were the best, so I went early the first morning I was in Hong Kong. I was expecting an old bakery, but the space looks fairly new inside with all the baked goods displayed in their glory.
The egg tarts didn’t disappoint. While I’m more of a fan of a flaky pastry crust, these are more like a cookie crust. The crust is rich and buttery, while the egg custard is silky smooth and not overly sweet. Picked up 6 egg tarts and a curry bun so I could get a takeaway box and enjoyed them the next few days. After 30 seconds in the microwave, they taste amazing.
I showed up at opening as I heard the line gets pretty crazy. When I walked by later in the week the line was wrapped around the block. So if you hate lines, show up early.

Being from Vancouver, I grew up on egg tarts and have grown to love and appreciate them. I had limited time to explore in Hong Kong, but I knew I had to get my hands on some good dan tats!
I did a little dan tat research prior, and Tai Cheong bakery is down for their sugary/​buttery shortbread crust. Generally I prefer a flakey dim-​sum style crust, but this one was pretty dang good. The custard was perfectly smooth and creamy, and not overly sweet. The best part is that the tarts are kept in the warmer until you’re ready to buy. Eat em right away as everyone knows they taste the best when it’s hot!
Very clean and fancy looking store not at fancy prices. Each egg tart is around $ 6 – 7 HKD. Recommended as there are many locations where you can get ‘em.

Visited here last week and had the infamous egg custard tart. The tart was buttery like a shortbread cookie and the egg custard was silken and smooth and not overly sweet. Easily one of the best tarts that I’ve had.

Tai Cheong, hands down, has the best egg tarts known to man kind. The tart itself was not bland or soggy — It was sugary and flakey. The custard was smooth, silky and had a strong egg flavour but wasn’t overly sweet.
For $ 7 HKD, I was really pleased with the outcome of how the egg tart tasted and I can’t wait to come back to stuff my face with more.

Located on Lyndhurst Terrace it’s a convenient location for those living in the central/​soho/​sheung wan area who wants a egg tart fix. It has a shortbread crust with a firm egg custard inside.
It was interesting to see the delivery of the empty pastry so I guess they are legitimately baked and put together on site and not merely warmed. $ 6 for an egg tart in my opinion is overpriced for the taste but I guess as a HK institution and ease of convenience to other famed eateries (Kau Kee, Yat Lok, etc) a nice pit stop for visitors to HK.

Best dan tat (egg tarts) you’ve ever had. Ever.
Tai Cheong is walking distance from my apartment and it’s a must have when you go to Hong Kong if you’re an egg tart fan. The crust is super flaky and the egg tarts center is a perfect creamy not too sweet and not too soft — amazing consistency. There’s no seating area at this bakery and it’s nothing fancy, so people just buy their pastries and enjoy it while walking to work or wherever they might be headed to that day. The size of the egg tarts are also a bit larger than the ones you get at a dim sum restaurant, about the size of my palm making one egg tart more than enough to satisfy my cravings.
Just a few steps walking distance south and you’ll also find the best, silkiest milk tea and lemon tea you’ve ever tasted that goes superb with your egg tart.

I actually bought my egg tart from the small Tai Cheong inside the Star ferry terminal at TST; however, there was no Unilocal listing for that store, so I’m posting mine here.
I’m sure I’ve had them when I used to live in Hong Kong, but it’s been 10+ years since I was last here, so it was great to try them again on my recent visit in May 2015. Yummos, delicious.

No seats or tables but turning out some good Chinese treats! The egg tarts are great. They don’t caramelize the tops like in other parts of China. Here they are bright yellow and soft with a flaky crust.
My wife tried the thousand year egg in a pastry that she really liked. I don’t find anything that’s thousand years old appetizing so I’ll just take her word for it.

It is a famous place. Lot of tourists passes by central and sometime asked me how to get here.
I also observe lot of group tour would buy this take out and eat this together on the street.
Is it that good? I think the bakery are not bad. Sometime I come here when I want to eat some. You can also get some souvenirs here like Hong Kong style cookies and bakery.
What I don’t like about this place is that the quality sometime is inconsistent. So far the egg tarts seems to taste fairly good most the time. However, the chicken tart sometime taste more soggy and less flavorful. This type of bakery is best eat when it is hot and flesh out of oven. So, you will find lot of people eating on the street. Best make sure you get a pack of napkin and a beverage from the 7 – 11 nearby.

I’m a mad fanatic over custard and egg tarts, so we buckled down and waited about 20 minutes in line to score a dozen of these tasty little tarts. Since we waited so long I couldn’t help but resist picking up a few other goodies from the register. A few wife cakes and some thousand year old egg in a pastry, and the others were tasty, the definite star of the show are Tai Cheong’s famous egg tarts. The crust is buttery and rich, and just the perfect thickness. The egg custard is silky, smooth, with the right amount of sweetness. The size of the tart is rather big too, so just one by itself is quite filling! The best thing about this bakery though, is that due to the sheer volume that they produce, you can bet that each egg tart is super fresh and hot right out the oven.
Embarrassingly enough, the BF was just SO hungry, his butterfingers got the best of him and as he tried to reach for an egg tart out of our to go box, he ended up dropping one of our dozen before he could get a single bite! You could literally feel the eyes on him and hear the groans of the other patrons at this guy dropping an egg tart so fresh that the steam was still coming off it.
Ahhh. Enjoy the egg tarts, but don’t be THAT guy!

This place is known for their egg tarts but… I don’t like it.
The crust is doughy like short bread. I like it flaky which is probably less healthy. But I was on vacation and wanted the good stuff. After eating their egg tarts, my family asked me not to go back there.

Tai Cheong Bakery has been around since 1954, and they have the reputation of making one of Hong Kong’s best egg tarts. You know me– I had to check it out!
I knew I had arrived to the right place when I got to the storefront and there was a slew of Japanese tourists taking pictures with their egg tarts outside! Good business means high inventory turnover, so their egg tarts are baked throughout the day.
I ordered 2 egg tarts ($ 6 HKD each) which came fresh out of the oven and still warm when I bit into it just moments later. (I couldn’t wait!) The custard was smooth and velvety, with just the right amount of sweetness and eggyness. The shortbread crust was crumbly and buttery. Yum!
Personally though, I prefer egg tarts with a flaky crust over a shortbread crust… so while they were delicious, they didn’t quite do it for me. As a matter of fact, I think I can find egg tarts that are just as good in the States. Overall, I’m glad I got to try them, but my quest for the perfect «don-​tot» continues!

In addition to the egg tarts, I tried the wife cakes and the pork pastry buns. My verdict is to stick to what they’re famous for and go with the piping hot egg tarts. Since the egg tarts sell so quickly, they are refreshed more than the other pastries that sit waiting to be bought. Having baked goods hot out of the oven makes a big difference.
Located near Hong Kong station and beside a bunch of wonton noodle soup locations so makes for a great post lunch/​dinner snack!

Ah! I read some much about this place and its egg tarts. We purposely didn’t’ order egg tarts at dim sum so we can come here after dim sum. Good, but honestly not that special… I would pass. The crust was not flaky at all.

Yummy eggtarts. Generally quite fresh as they get continuous business.
$ 6 an eggtart which is pricier than some more local spots, but I must say those $ 6 are not wasted. Warm, soft custard in the middle that is the right amount of sweetness. Good cookie crust.
No need to turn back. Just have one. (Or try to have just one and not have your mouth watering just thinking about them.)

omg. soooo good — I’m craving one right now! The pastry dough is nice and flaky. Not overly thick (which alot of wife cakes fall victim too) and had a great melon interior filling! They do NOT skimp on filling here. Reasonably priced for the size of the pastry you get too.

This place rocks my socks. Tai Cheong is now a chain, but that only serves to benefit the rest of Hong Kong that doesn’t want to trek out to a middle-​of-​nowhere location on Central.
Their dan tats is considered one of the best in Hong Kong, and they live 100% up to the hype. The dan tats have a shortbread crust (crumbly and buttery and ready to fall apart in your lap after the first bite), and the most amazing, creamy filling.
Don’t be discouraged by a long line — it will go fast, and they’re constantly churning out more batches of these golden beauties!
