Dull as ditchwater! Prawn Japanese curry awful. Tempura prawns sauce with rice! Dreadful!

I happened to be flicking through the Go To Belfast magazines that are always sitting around in my office, trying to find inspiration for something different to do, and what did I see, but a Sushi Making Evening at the Ginger Tree! I decided to take a gamble and go for it. I had never tried sushi before, and to tell the truth, I didn’t really fancy it, it never looked particularly appetising to me, but it’s always good to try new things. We arrived at the restaurant and got a warm welcome, the décor is gorgeous and the staff, in traditional Japanese dress, really go above and beyond — already I was impressed! My first few attempts were not great, I must admit, but I soon got the hang of it, and am pleased to report that I now love sushi, it is my new obsession! Also, don’t worry if you mess some up, it’s all you can eat so you’ve got plenty of opportunities to get things right! You need to book yourself in, and the deposit is a fiver. In total it came to £20(each) so it’s a wee bit pricey, but absolutely worth it, it was a great experience and I can’t wait to do it again.

The Ginger Tree Japanese Restaurant on Donegall place is amazing! Their sushi really is awesome and on par with that of Zen. They do a special offer on a thurseday evening where you can eat all the sushi you want for £20! This is an absolute bargain considering the quality of food and then the sheer amount of different sushi on offer on the night! We went there as a group of 8 and the staff were great and more than able to cope. The sishi was fab as always and we were there for quite some time trying out everything! It’s agreat idea for thoses new to sushi who want to find out what they like! And you can be really adventerous because there’e plenty more there if you select wrong! Amust go to for sushi fans!

You know your onto a good thing when you walk in the rain to get there. I have been told so many good things about this delightful little restaurant that I simply had to give my new-found Japanese craving a bit of a go. The ambience is excellent. The place is chilled out. The menu has everything and anything. The sushi is quality. Everything was going exactly how I wanted until I was asked a question that changed the night… «Would you like to adopt?»… Nah I’m only messing. I was actually asked«Is this as good as Zen?» and then everything came into focus. The place simply isn’t as good as Zen. Zen is arguably the finest eatery in Belfast, if not certainly one of the finest. Ginger Tree has a similar atmosphere, similar menu, similar style. And from reading John M’s review, Zen may have come after, but it still is better. I’m all for breaking into the unknown and Ginger Tree is great for that. But we went to Zen a few weeks before, and I raved about it to everyone. The Ginger Tree, if you have never eaten Japanese, is stunning. But it can and has been beaten by a restaurant a mile down the road. Really very good and great prices. But not the best in Belfast.

This little unassuming restaurant was Belfast’s first jump into the world of Japanese cuisine, and in my opinion can still hold its head high. Situated on Donegal Pass this place is quite modern and moody inside, that said, welcoming. I’ve only had takeaway from it so far, it really is the place for the best sushi in the city in my humble opinion. On our venture into the hugely varied menu we opted for a sushi platter and one main course. The platter was extensive, deep fried tofu, crab roe, tuna, salmon, California rolls and tasty little deep fried shrimp rolls(which I might add were superb) The main was an udon noodle dish with beef and huge lumps of jelly like tofu. A tasty, well seasoned, fresh noodle dish. This place is within walking distance of all many of bars and student areas. Botanic is the closet, followed by a short run up to the Lisburn Road and is only a 10min walk into the city. We loved the sushi, it was pricey at £12 but it was all handmade, perfectly balanced and fresh.

The Ginger Tree is a Chinese & Japanese. I love the ginger tree. I been there alot and I am never dissapointed, there is something for everyone from sushi to good old chicken. If your a 1st timer go for the Osaka meal, you get a little bit of everything. It might not be as cheap as your local takeaway but the service & food means its well worth it. If your not looking to spend a lot for a meal they do the early bird menu which ends at 6.45 this menu. Also I would recommend the lunch menu. You get a square bamboo type box with different snacks to hit your taste buds like they have never been hit before. The music and atmosphere is so relaxing too.

Fantastic Japanese food at The Ginger Tree– very authentic and a reasonable price. The sushi and sashimi are both fab. The staff are friendly and can’t do enough for you. Definitely the best Japanese food in Belfast.

This is actually Japanese rather than Chinese. Food is excellent even the green beans which are a complimentary apéritif. Staff are friendly and helpful. Sushi is highly rated but I haven’t tried this. Also they take the Hi-Life card which gives 2 meals for price of one.
