Baguette World

I don’t know why I am so obsessed with this place, but I haven’t stopped thinking about it almost a month later.
We had flown into Birmingham at 5am, and we were looking for a place that had wifi and somewhere warm to sit. This lead us to Mcdonalds right next door to Baguette World.
We saw construction workers walking by the window with delicious looking baguettes, and I knew I needed to find the source.
Little did I know, we were right next door to it!
It is the littlest shop, but I was in awe of the yummy options, and insanely cheap prices!
1 pound for a loaded baguette? After getting the London price shock, it was so relieving to see their prices!
They offer breakfasts, warm and cold baguettes, etc. and the two warm baguettes we got were soo delicious. It was just what we needed.
We took our sandwiches down to Café Nero, but they didn’t quite make it the whole way :)
Basically, we are glad we followed the construction workers, because they know about little gems like this!

When this place first opened, I was a bit wary about going in as from the outside it didn’t look that inviting.
However, whilst out and about hunger striked and I decided to give them go. On the menu they offer your normal sandwich and baguette fillings along with jacket potatoes and pasta dishes.
They also sell a range of soft drinks and cakes such as flapjacks and chocolate sponge. I couldn’t see any homemade cakes on offer which was disappointing as I think that all side café takeaways should at least offer something homemade.
The women who work there provide a quick and easy service. T
hey also like to spend ages counting your change so be prepared to hold your hand up for a while!

The baguette place at the top of the ramp (shop would be too kind a word) isn’t that bad as far as cheap city centre baguette places go. There’s usually a big queue around about lunchtime which spills back out onto the ramp, which is an indicator that either it’s not that bad or a hell of a lot of people can’t be bothered to make packed lunches.
Until I came to do this review I didn’t know it was called Baguette World, I just knew where it was and that its chicken tikka baguettes are quite nice, as are its cheese and bacon ones. Baguette World makes sense as a name, although Baguette Hatch might be more appropriate.
Probably very unhealthy, but definitely very cheap; this is the sort of place to nip to if you’re broke and starving — I’m often both, but I usually take a packed lunch these days.

Calling your shop ‘Baguette World’ is something of a bold claim to make. Does it mean you’re staking your claim as the premier baguette seller in the world? Does it mean your baguettes encompass every facet of world cuisine? Whatever it is, it probably conjures up a different mental imagine in your mind than the one presented to you just as you leave the Pallasades and head toward New Street. There’s no real way to sugar coat it — Baguette World looks pretty grubby. I appreciate this is in no small part down to the dirty ramp it’s located on, but it doesn’t help itself. However, the food quality is a different story entirely. Definitely a budget option for lunch, you can grab a baguette from 99p, or a meal deal (baguette with crisps and a drink) for just £1.75. I’ve found that the food quality tends to vary — sometimes you get a baguette overflowing with filling (I mean this as a positive, as I love stuffing my face), and sometimes you get a decidedly more sparse offering. It’s for this reason — and the general unappealing look of the place — that tends to drive me to Eat4Less, an expanding chain of similar shops, which generally give off a nicer vibe.

Baguette World is very similar in layout and menu to Baguette du Monde. Cheap and cheery baguettes and paninis. They opened a few months ago, but (perhaps?) due to the credit crunch, their opening offers seemed to have been extended. This means that at present, all baguettes are just £1 and all paninis are £1.50!
Perfect for a credit-​crunch busting munch. Recommended!
