The most femininely named sandwich shop in Birmingham actually does huge man-size portions. Once you set foot in Dominique’s you’ll see that this isn’t really about a battle of the sexes, the intention is to actually make all its customers feel like little boys and girls again. You see, the look is pure tuck shop. The shop floor is jam packed with hundreds of boxes of crisps straight from the cash and carry. They are piled high as if the 5th formers who are surely running this shop have been building forts between lessons. This place is like a cathedral to lunch times. The back wall is spanned by an alter of a food counter, which is stuffed full of all the lovely fresh ingredients on offer. Above this is the menu, which is equally as huge. Challenge yourself to think of a baguette that isn’t on this list — I really can’t!

Dominique’s is the closest thing I’ve seen to an old-fashioned school ‘tuck shop’ in recent years. Primarily a sandwich shop, it offers everything from baguettes to salads and soups to pasta boxes. However, adorning one large wall is a huge selection of crisps, chocolates and baked goods to satisfy anyone’s junk food craving. There’s enough choice here to keep you satisfied over many return visits, and while it’s not the cheapest sandwich shop in the vicinity, the size of the portions more than makes up for this. The bread is thick and fresh, and they spoil you with the fillings. There are fresh cakes and pastries to tempt you, including a selection of Indian food.
