Hughes is a mini supermarket that mainly sells fresh fruit and vegetables. They also sell a few plain flowers. The only negative thing I have to say about Hughes is that the aisles are narrow and I soon discovered people have to walk down them in single file. If you want to go past somebody you’ll have to shuffle or squeeze past them. I’m sure this invaded people’s personal space, like it did mine. Birmingham has loads of shops like Hughes and many of the ones I’ve seen are quiet unclean and it’s obvious the products have been left out for a while. Here though, there’s probably fresher fruit and vegetable here than in the supermarket not to mention the prices are a lot better. As well as the normal prices being low, I was also pleased to see the amount of deals they had. Two boxes of strawberries can be picked up for £1.00 and a bunch of bananas for just under £1.00. So I think this shop is underrated.

I love a local grocer. Hughes is no exception — they had a really good selection of fruit and veg, which all looked in very good nick. They also had other useful bits and bobs such as nuts and herbs, and 2 packets of Foxes chocolate biscuits for a mere £1! That was, of course, a special offer — I can’t promise you that that is a permanent feature… I bought an enormous bag of Braeburn apples and a less enormous bag of nectarines, — plus my 2 packets of biscuits it all came to £3.58, which seemed very reasonable.

This Fruit and Veg’ store made my day at Acocks Green all the more worth it. I am beginning to put changes in place after three years of ‘hard work’, partying and more partying at university, I am now back and things have to change. I am often asked the biggest thing I have gained since studying a degree miles away from home for three years to which I reply– my belly. My modified diet now consists of plant strong ingredients– meaning obviously fruit and vegetables will make up a lot of my diet. My first week was a struggle, I spent £21 in Tesco just on fruit and still managed to forget things. I walked out of Hughes topping up my fruit selection along with some veg’ for just £17. Whenever I am in close proximity I will be sure to revisit here(assuming my new diet lasts of course).
