We used to go to Munchies, buy drinks for each other, share stories, achievements, hurts and pain over a cup of tea. One day one of the staff shouted me and asked when I was moving my minus from there. I said Pardon twice giving her time to change her words. Instead she spelt it out. The disabled people who sat with me providing wages were referred to as minus. When i moved, they would too. I told the mother of one of the disabled men. she went to customer services. She wasn’t happen with the response especially whenthe staff and officer started laughing. This woman with learning difficulties started a protest. Even whilst she stood there with her banner the staff carried on their mealymouthed comments and discrimination against disabled, black people. I do not eat from people who font serve good with love

With all the talk of streetfood being huge in Birmingham, there is a subsection of this which is being forgotten. The humble market food van. This particular van is situated right on the edge of the market(as you come from the Bullring) and has been a fixture here for many years. On many occasions I have passed by this little van and smelt their delicious wares tickling my nostrils, but not being one to grab breakfast out very often I have resisted it’s temptations. That was until this morning where the temptation proved too strong and I had to give their«£2 breakfast bap with tea or coffee» deal a go. I do love bacon and all things cholesterol-y, but as I am trying to watch my weight(an impossible feat), I chose to go for egg and mushroom on my bap. The fantastic member of staff that served me was friendly, smiley, helpful and chatty when taking my order and whilst I was waiting. The coffee was your standard fare, but surprisingly good(I was expecting some awful mellowbirds) and very hot. The mushrooms tasted mushroomy and fresh. The egg was cooked right then and there and was fried to perfection. To my surprise it wasn’t too greasy at all and the white was cooked through whilst the yolk was dippable(yes, I may have invented another word). I chose to sat underneath their small awning area and enjoy my breakfast in the sunshine. The other clientele was a mix of construction workers on their morning break, early shoppers grabbing a quick bite to eat before hitting the Bullring and some people who(like me) looked like they just fancied a bite to eat in the morning. If, like me, you are a regular at the market; give it a go. Its cheap, good food served with a smile. You won’t be disappointed.

Munchies is a nice little burger/snack van right by the outdoor market in Birmingham’s Bull Ring. It’s a few steps closer to the Rag market than the other similar van, Snaxy’s so maybe you just can’t walk 10 steps further without having a cuppa, but there is hardly any distinction between the two. Both do super cheap butties, sarnies, sausages, burgers, tea and coffee in styrofoam cups and you could probably fill your belly and get change from a £2 coin. it’s a perfect place to take 5 minutes and sit down for a tea or a plate of chips while you are doing your market shopping and mingle with the traders and shoppers. I mean, if you turned off by this kind of place there is always the bistros and posh restaurants in the Bull Ring but I don’t think you will even get the waiter’s attention for less than a fiver.

A while back I was unfortunate enough to be working at a food outlet in the Bullring(I wish I could review them and tell you what it’s really like in there). One of the few saving graces of working in that part of town was this brilliant little sandwich van. One of a handful of such vans around the markets, this one is the dark green one just outside the rag market and by the outdoor market. Munchies of the Bullring does a good trade with the stall holders and bulders working around the place, doing the usual array of bacon, sausage, egg and mushroom combinations — as well as tea, coffee, pop and other types of sandwiches. The food is well priced and very tasty indeed. The tea is something like 60p so you can’t go wrong. There are also a few tables for you to sit and enjoy your breakfast/brunch/snack. Despite having escaped the clutches of my previous employer(or rather being let go on Christmas Eve… sod anonymity, it was Café Rouge) I still swing by this van when I’m in the area and I’d recommend that you do too.
