I occasionally work near this pub so myself and some work colleagues are known to pop in from time to time. The benefit of this establishment is that you can grab a quick drink and bite to eat relatively quickly and cheaply. Inside is a well maintained public house. It is nicely decorated, complete with leaded windows and wooden floors, and has a traditional feel. There are plenty of tables and lots of space to have a quiet drink. The food is cheap but fairly cheerful and even on a busy lunchtime you won’t wait long for your order. There is a well stocked bar with some real ales. If the weather is nice(you know those 3 days we get a year) there is a large seating area at the front of the pub and also a small beer garden at the back.

With a great name like this, I could not give it a miss! Set on the«Aston University», more precisely on Gosta Green, the Sacks of Potatoes is considered a proper student pub, which means it can be very loud during the evenings. As I have been there for a breakfast with my husband and friends before a pub crawl, it was quite early and I didn’t spot any sign of a student environment. I quite liked the chilled atmosphere. Although it’s a famous pub for its traditional real ales, they have plenty of larger options for a really good price. For being a tiny pub, I imagine struggling a little bit to find some seats, if the place is packed. Luckily, and if the weather permits, there are really lovely seats outside that even with all the noise noise coming from the traffic on Woodstock Street(another great name), it’s still something. The breakfast is great, and the full English is served in decent portion. They have some meal + drinks meals that are also worth.

Been in for a quick lunch once, the food was a bit crappy. But the atmosphere was good. Can get quite busy.

This pub is basically on the student campus, but is a long way from being what I would consider a student pub. 3 unpredictable ale choices for a start. Went for a Harvieston Bitter + Twisted. They didn’t really top me up sufficiently, but at 2.20 a pint, I do believe I shall let them off this once

The Sack Of Potatoes is Aston University’s ‘other’ pub, comprising of a more traditional affair than the nearby Scream. Inside, the layout and decoration are more reminiscent of a traditional real ale-lover’s watering hole, with with big screen televisions for watching whatever sport happen to be on at the time. It’s not at all expensive, the food is decent enough and the whole atmosphere is laid back. When there aren’t any sports on, the Sack is great for a quiet drink after work. My only real complaint about the place is that it can be a little cramped inside, especially near the bar area. Even if you’re the only person standing at the bar, you can still constitute an obstruction for anyone trying to get from the door to one of the tables. I prefer a more spacious environment to drink in, but luckily they do offer outdoor seating if you fancy taking your food and drink out into the elements.

This is a great little pub in an awesome location. The food is always very tasty and not too expensive. Great place to watch the football match with a lot of screens everywhere. No particular night stands out any time of the week is good it is almost always open. Often find a friendly local crowd and students. Great place to meet up with friends over a nice cold pint.
