Housed in a bright pink shop in the North Laines, GAFF is a rug store that stocks hundreds of different designs. The stock is easy to look through and you can choose by colour, style or texture. If you don’t find what you’re looking for already made up, the company also offer a bespoke service where you can design and get your own rug produced for around £120 per square meter. A lot of the designs aren’t to my taste but I wouldn’t mind one of their cowhide rugs.

If you’re in the game for a rug, you can’t go very wrong with Gaff. They’ve got pretty much every kind of shaggy or woven floor covering your pretty little heart desires.‘Hand Tufted, Hand Knotted, Shaggy, Cow hides, Sheepskins, Wool, Acrylic, Cotton, Silk, Viscose, Sisal. Any size… any shape… any colour’.
Perhaps the best thing about this store though, is that you can order a bespoke rug created to a specific design you have in mind. Sure, it’ll cost you (from £120 per square metre) but there’s no end of possibilities. Still, their stocked designs are a great departure from the safe Ikea and Habitat standards. The patterns and colours are truly inspiring and start from just £50. I’ve already reserved a teal pattern for my next paycheck!

Gaff advertise themselves as ‘art for floors’, and I wouldn’t disagree.
Whenever I walk past, they always seem to have a new window display. Everything from intricate flower designs, incredible modern art transposed into carpet form, geometric patterns… anything you could want to put on your floor, they’ve got it. If you’re after something a little plainer, they can do that too — I love the brightly coloured shag pile rugs.
Best of all, if your pockets are deep enough, you can get your own design made up.

Why shop around for that perfect rug to compliment your décor, when you can have one designed for you — or even better, design one for yourself?
That’s what this fabulous little shop near Brighton station specialises in. You can choose from a bewildering array of patterns, in your choice of colour schemes, or design your own from scratch. Prices are extraordinarily reasonable.
What’s more, the shop makes a huge effort to ensure their carpets are made according to high labour standards, so you can shop with a clear conscience, too. They also have a range of rugs in stock.
The staff are amazingly helpful and very friendly, and will guide you through the whole process. The web-​site is an excellent guide to their services.
The company also has a small shop in Epsom, south west of London.
