Because it’s situated on St. James’ street one might have the inclination to avoid Geo Watts & Son on the assumption that it might be a little scummy. However, this is not the case, as they go to proper lengths to ensure they serve fresh, quality produce everyday. As with any butcher or farm delivery service it’s worth paying a little extra for decent meat that isn’t 50% water like most Tesco and Sainsbury meats. The fact it’s an independent business with extremely friendly staff make it the ethical and enjoyable alternative to the fish stall at your local supermarket.

This family run business is an excellent resource to the Kemp Town area, and a refreshing change to much of what else is on offer. Nearby you’ll find fancy bistros and organic stores, alongside numerous cornershops, not to mention the giants Co-Op, Morrison’s and Tesco’s. But fishmongers Geo Watts & Son is the only fresh fish supplier on the street, with no butchers at all. The man who runs the place is really helpful, and happy to advise if you’re not used to cooking fish. The friendly service and knowledge that you’re supporting a local business, make the slightly higher than cheapie Morrison’s price tag totally worth it.
