Good Lord, what a spicy curry. I asked for it though, so it’s nobody’s fault but my own. At the time, my normal order of chicken korai wasn’t listed on the menu, so I asked the good man if the chef would kindly whip one up for me. «Of course,» he said. «How hot would you like it?» «Um, you know, like madras hot,» I said. I learned my lesson, boy. It was like that scene in «Along Came Polly», where Ben Stiller was sweating profusely after consuming a number of dishes in an Indian restaurant — I was literally dripping with perspiration, but to make matters worse, I couldn’t stop eating because it tasted so good. So yeah, basically I’m a bit masochistic. But I’ve been back since and asked for something a bit more modest on the heat index and have been happy every time.

Spice merchant is one of my go to places when I want takeaway. We’ve had some really good evenings in with their meals so I thought I’d try out the city centre branch for a change one lunch time. I was quite impressed that they had a totally different lunch time menu with lighter bites and cheaper options than their evening stuff. The service was prompt and the food was really quite nice. I had a grilled sizzler that was lovely but my work colleague wasn’t too impressed by her lamb dish. Evening time it costs can mount up quickly which is why we tend to get takeaway and have our own drinks. Also there’s never really much of an atmosphere or particular enjoyment about eating there.
