This pub looks very nice and we were happy to nab a cute little two person booth in which to enjoy our drinks. The loudness of the locals stopped it from being in any way romantic mind you. There were 4 ales, but they were all quite boring, common selections. We tried Boondoggle and Wainwrights which were, as expected, perfectly drinkable without being particularly interesting. They have cask marque accreditation.

The food is good value. i had the steak last time i was there which cost £8.95 and tasted great and the chips were perfect too. its a Marstons pub so they sell delicious Pedigree bitter which is one of my favorites. i will be going again next time im in Chester.

The Custom House Inn is the first and last pub we visited in Chester. It is on Watergate Street just as you enter the city centre. I really liked this place, it had a good atmosphere, a variety of seating and a well stocked bar. A good range of both beers and spirits too, an especially fine glass of whisky! It would be a great place to spend a lazy Saturday afternoon, and they also serve food too. It was the only place late on a Saturday night that didn’t have huge queues or standing room only, so we took advantage of this to have one last relaxing drink, sitting on a very comfortable sofa.

The voucher I received for a free drink that could be redeemed immediately was a major bonus of this place although I would’ve loved it anyway. Recently refurbished, the pub has an attractively modern air while still retaining some of its older elements, such as the low ceiling timbers that I smacked my head on repeatedly. Unlike anywhere else I can remember, you feel safe with Chester calling it’s taverns ‘Ye Olde ____Inn’ since that’s how people genuinely used to refer to them. Try that anywhere else and you’d be given a slap and told to behave.

This is a pub which serves food. The food is brilliant! Serves all sorts of food. I think if you order in advance it is a bit cheaper. The food quality is very good and the prices are reasonable. There is no parking around the pub — you would have to use a nearby car park or travel by bus. It is very welcoming and a bit oldy worldy. You get served very quickly. They have a good selection of beers.

A great little pub down Watergate Street that serves great beer with a smile. It’s a great little place to go and watch live football whilst the other half goes shopping on a Saturday afternoon. The bar staff are very friendly and the prices are generally a lot cheaper than other Chester establishments. Real ale on tap. Highly recommended.

This is a very traditional British pub although it welcomes a wide range of clientelle. It is right in the centre of the city which means it does very quite busy — and this is not helped by the layout which is a little confusing and pokey — but then the building itself is several hundred years old so this can be forgiven! The beer and the food is quite cheap and of quite a good standard. They do have TVs but it’s not really a football pub — and they can be quite strict about football shirts and songs! If you want a traditional style pub in Chester — and lets be honest their are very few of them left here — then you won’t do that much better.

The Custom house is on the end of one of Chester’s oldest streets which has ‘rows’, Watergate Street. Go here when the races aren’t on and you’ll find plenty of space and decent grub in a traditional British pub. Recently they’ve had an offer on for rump steak, chips and peas for £4.99 all day every day and, believe me, it’s good! I go for a veggie option personally and there are loads of them! Plenty of choice on draught and now an outdoor area at the back for smokers. Staff are really friendly and the whole place is very welcoming to everyone! A great place for a newcomer to Chester to visit.
