After a night of bar hopping this was music to my taste buds. There were a few folks wandering in and out so we decided to wander in ourselves. Excellent choice for after bar food. We purchased a slice of meat pizza and a slice of cheese and decided to hang out for a minute even though there’s no seating(because who knows? Maybe we’ll want more!) As we were standing there nomming down our slices a local couple comes stumbling in, all happy after a night of booze, and began chatting us up. The only words we understood were«pi’a wi’a?» and that’s because he handed his phone to his girlfriend to take a photo of him with my friend(who has long dreadlocks). They were having fun talking at us and we were laughing and smiling trying our best to follow along(we’re from Seattle). They went on their way and we just had to have MORE of that damn good pizza at a pretty damn good price. Not only were the customers super nice but the staff behind the counter were super smiley as well. If we find ourselves in the area needing some good after bar food we will be visiting again.

How to describe Azzimo? Have you ever played pizza dice? It’s a rhetorical question, ‘cos I just made the game up. It might seem like a game of luck, but there are tactics. Come in when it’s busy and the pizza you want will be gone, come in when it’s quiet and the pizza on offer will be have been in the hotbox for ages and be stale. The canny pizza consumer will time it just right. What works for me, for a late night pizza, is to time your exit from pub/nightclub about 30 mins before closing time. That way, you get freshly made pizza slices and no drunken queue to contend with. That is, of course, unless you are the drunken queue. A freshly made pizza from here is very good indeed, and if you’re having a party in the area, I would highly recommend ordering a couple of 12″ pizzas, or, if it’s a large party full of hungry hungry people, splash out for the 18″ monsters. Pizza’s are their speciality, but it’s not the be all and end all(I will argue that pizza is most definitely the be all and end all of everything). There are pastas, baked tatties and pakoras waiting to be heated up. They do chips and sometimes, on some rare nights, they have been known to shove some chippy favourites on, like the ever popular Smoked Sausage, or the mysterious King Rib. Most definitely a speciality of late night noms, where shame and regret have been nullified by vast quantities of beer and tequila. But give the place a try in the daylight, it’s surprisingly good.

Called Azzimo at 5.20pm on a Saturday night, and was told it would take 45 minutes to get my pizza. Apparently the ovens needed half an hour to get heated up. Although this seemed completely absurd, I wasn’t desperately hungry — so fine, whatever. So it actually took 1 hour and 15 minutes, which didn’t particularly impress me. The gigantic pizza was pretty tasty, and miraculously still hot. The sides weren’t so good. Fairly typical vegetable pakora(chip-shop style), and garlic bread that seemed closer to a croûton than anything soft and delicious. It was so hard I didn’t even want to eat it. They also forgot to add the dip that I requested, but on the plus side — I also wasn’t charged for that! Don’t know if I’ll order again, maybe some horrible sequence of events made the pizza so late and the garlic bread so hard. You’re not going to get an 18inch pizza so cheap at any major place, it has to be said.

Waited over an hour for a pizza delivery. was told it’d be half an hour max, arrived stone cold and delivery guy said ‘heat it up in microwave’.I think not, got money back and ordered somewhere else.

Stuck in the merchant city and trying desperately not to spend all my wages on a spot of lunch, i trundled by this place, turned, did a wee double take, slight bend of the knees, squint of the eyes, followed by a surely audible to many around me ‘yeah why not’. As Stephanie so correctly point out, this aint your average chippy/takeaway joint. Missing are the banks of fryers, kebab poles(which look like an amorphous blob is doing a sweaty pole dance), nasty smells and stale looking grub. In there place lie a collection of pasta dishes just waiting to be warmed up, a pizza oven, oh, and a wee fryer(it IS Glasgow mind). When i popped in i was totally in the mood for a spot of comfort grub, so opted for some mac and cheese, chips and a coke(just booked an appointment with the cardiologist) all for 3.50…bargain! Grabbed, walked, George Square sat… yum.

Azzimo is not just your average chippy or pizzeria. From the outset, it looks just like a regular takeaway, the kind of place you would stumble into after a night of beer filled fun or drop into after a hard day at Uni for a quick bite. However, this little Italian place is much more than that. They sell Italian food, so you won’t find pakora or battered sausage in here. They specialise in pizza and pasta. The pizzas are amazing, if not a bit pricey, but you do get what you pay for. The best thing about Azzimo is the on line ordering system. On their website you can choose to have an order delivered or ready to be picked up, and the site takes you through all of your different choices. You take a basic pizza and can add anything you like. Prices start from 11.00 for a classic cheese, all the way up to 13.00 for an Azzimo’s Speciality pizza-which sounds divine! More than just your average takeaway, by far!
