If you like cheese it doesn’t get much better than a visit to George Mewes. First tried George’s wares a few Christmases back and I’ve been going ever since. Doesn’t matter what time of day you go in or how busy it is, you’ll still get the same immense and consistent service. The people that work here know their cheese and are unbelievably passionate about their products. Wandered passed the other day and the smell pulled me in and I had to purchase some Stilton. The guy working that day pointed out that the Stilton is at an all time high, he cut a piece off and gave me it to prove it. He wasn’t wrong, the Stilton here is probably the best thing I’ve ever eaten, hands down. My girlfriend who apparently didn’t like blue cheese has now been converted. It isn’t just the Stilton that is good, it goes for every type I’ve tried or bought here. The prices are a little higher than supermarkets but that doesn’t matter as the product here isn’t even comparable. Once you start shopping here you’ll never look at generic supermarket cheese in the same way again. If you like cheese, don’t go anywhere else!

Cheese heaven for all you cheese fans, lots of selection and very happy to give tastings, also have great fresh bread selection as well as other items that would be great with cheeses like cured meats and pickles and much much more

If you’re someone who enjoys the pungent smell of stinky cheeses(and I am), then you’ll enjoy George Mewes. They’ve got a nice selection of cheeses that you aren’t going to find in your average grocery store. If you’re not sure what you’re looking for or have only a vague idea, they’ll give you samples of cheeses that they think you might like until you find the right one, and they won’t judge you if your only criteria is «something…gooier». On my first visit, after I left, I saw a woman walking a bulldog who tried desperately to duck into the shop. She held him back since dogs aren’t allowed inside, but one of the cheesemongers came out with some small pieces of parmesan for him and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a happier dog. If you enjoy cheese, that’s how George Mewes will make you feel: as happy as a bulldog eating smelly cheese.

Not being a cheese eater myself, I can’t comment personally on how tasty their cheese is. HOWEVER, I went in here last week to get a fathers’ day present for my paw, as I figured a cheese board would be marginally more healthy than the usual bottle of whisky. The woman serving us was so helpful, I mean really, she couldn’t have been nicer at all. She suggested a range of cheeses that paw might like based only on my sparse knowledge of ‘I think he likes blue ones’ and my utter lack of knowing how a cheese might taste given I haven’t eaten it for about 6 years. Simon was on hand to taste test and was in raptures with the little tidbits offered. Dad too was in raptures when he opened his gift, unwrapping it right away and then wandering between the kitchen and the living room topping up on cheese and crackers. While I was in, I noticed they sell Golden Age honey and John Mellis honey — both very delicious and pure honeys, so I’ll be back for some of that. I imagine as cheese shops go, this one is excellent.

mmm Cheese. Well I do love some great cheese and this is one of the best places to come too. The guys here have a great selection for across the board(pardon the pun). Cow’s, goat, sheep. Lots of choice and the guys behind the counter are great to ask if you get stuck. In addition to the cheese they have a great selection of accompaniments all different sorts of pickles and chutneys, oat cakes and many more bits too. They have an interesting selection of sweet bits too with some lovely cake and tablet although I have yet to try these. If your looking for a gift the guys will be able to put together a basket of bits and pieces or they offer a great little gift voucher for that special someone to choose their favourites. They are a lovely addition to Byres Road and well worth a visit.

BEVERYCAREFULWHENBUYINGCHEESEFROMTHESEPEOPLE. You’ll walk in, all happy and eager, curious to try the veritable cornucopia of dairy-based delights in this chilled shop, and they’ll be nice to you. Too Nice. They’ll give you the first taste for free. And the second. They start on soft mild cheeses, work you through the Something Interestings, and the next thing you know you’ve walked out having bought something with truffles through it, having mortgaged a relative to do so. BEWARE. THERANGEOFGOODSISINCREDIBLYTASTYANDTHESTAFFAREEVIL. EEEEVIIIILLLLLLLL.

Arguably Mellis’ is more famous in Glasgow. Mewes is far better. Superb, friendly and knowledgable staff who wish to share their love of cheese.

‘German’ croissant? The hubs and I were intrigued, so we went in, and, boy, were we glad that we did! Besides the croissant, we were treated to a selection of ‘Bavarian’ breads from a local baker. The cheese, though, was the high point of the visit. Not only was the gal behind the counter knowledgeable, she was friendly and engaged and let us sample a half dozen cheeses from Scotland, England, France, and Switzerland. We purchased a lovely soft and stinky cheese from Scotland, and a firm and nutty cheese from England – Lord help me if I didn’t write down what they were! – to be consumed with a fantastic stout a la some Scottish brewery that we’d picked up in a local Odd Bins in Byres Road. Toss in some oak cakes and we had ourselves dinner! As for the croissant, well, it, too came from the Bavarian bakery. Total lecker!

This place is everything a person should want in a cheese shop. Small, impressively-stocked, great service from knowledgeable employees and owner, and little extras that put it at the five star mark. As a former cheese shop worker, I was impressed that their«standard» parmigiano reggiano was a 30-month beauty, rather than a 24-month variety. I also was looking for something funky, and was introduced — new as I am to UK cheeses — to the delights of artisanal Ardrahan. George himself is a pleasure to talk to, and sent me on my way with the added benefit of a focaccia roll. They are a new reason for me to regret not living in the West End.

Cheesemonger. What a word. What a shop! The counter is impressive, a whole array of massive blocks of hard, soft, cow’s, goat’s, sheep’s(!), mature or fresh… its all there. And there’s 3 different kinds of it! If you like cheese, this place is like a dream. The staff are very knowledgeable, especially George himself, and they are more than willing to give out samples. You often find George on Byres road passing out samples to passer-bys. Ok, its a little expensive, but have ya seen the price of shrink wrapped rubber cheese-ish in Tesco? Its no cheap. So if you want cheese, why dont you go buy some decent stuff rather than the bland orange blocks of strangeness available in the supermarkets. It tastes better and you’ll need less of it for your toast. Worth going out your road for.

It was a delicious day we discovered George Mewes! If you like cheese you will LOVE this place. No pre-packed wobbly plastic orange substances, none of the fakery of I J Mellis, not even a whole lot of décor — just a simple display of cheese with informative labels. The first time I visited I was heavily pregnant and I did not have to say a thing — an array of non-blue fully pasteurised cheeses were presented for my tasting pleasure by an eager to please and knowledgeable member of staff. And you know what — they were all great! We’ve since become frequent customers. Their selection is impressive, the quality consistently excellent, and they have many interesting and unusual cheeses I had never seen before. Samples are always forthcoming to assist with life’s caeseous dilemmas, and allowing your two year old to choose is greeted with friendly amusement. One final positive is that my husband almost received a gift voucher from George Mewes for Christmas(!) The voucher was lost by the person who bought it but we were able to use the receipt in its place without any hassle.
