Please dont tell me this is another one of my memories that’s been ruined by improvement. I loved to go to the botanic garden when i was young with my friends. we loved the heat, the plants, and the goldfish.

This really is the highlight of the Botanic Gardens. It’s free, it’s in a charming and historic Victorian building, and it is so incredibly peaceful inside. All that warm fresh air in that airy bright space is simply divine. Just thought I’d note, since it’s not clear on the sign. It’s open 10am — 6pm, but only until 4:15pm «in winter.» Well what’s winter, you may ask? That is November 1 to April 1. I called. You’re welcome.

OK so maybe this is cheating a little in as much as the Kibble Palace is inside the Botanic gardens, but grizzly with me if you please. This wonderful green house is the most excellent place for a number of occasions… check em out — its raining outside and you have a small child who likes to run, jump, grrr, splash and move small stones from one flower bed to another for hours on end… — its raining and you want to grab a spot of lunch, or more precisely, you’ve grabbed lunch and want somewhere to eat it… — its raining… Are we noticing a thread here people? So it rains a lot in Glasgow and this is one of the few spots where you can loiter for free(man you should see me loiter… it’s like i’, the god damn dictionary definition of that shizzle)… so yeah, get your ass along here and check it out. Groove factor 5 for this joint…

A lovely piece of history plonked in the middle of the Botanics for all to discover or — more likely — rediscover. From the outside, it may look like a larger and more ornate green house not worth a second glance. Yet, inside it’s like some form of tropical hideaway. Perfect for popping into for a midweek stroll; hungover Sunday activity or entertaining the young nephew and nieces in(see Paul’s mention of the pond). This is also used as an event venue from time to time e.g. Bards In The Botanics and the Triangle Launch(last summer). Needless to say, the setting does wonders for any event and creates a relaxed, almost magical feel(well, at least it did during my viewing of Othello). Furthermore, unlike some places its refurbishment has actually improved it. Check it out pronto.

Take one step inside Kibble Palace and the horn beeping, dog barking, children playing noises of the West End are silenced instantly as you close the door behind you. Now I know less than nothing about plants, but I do know there is something very relaxing about strolling underneath the glass ceiling of Kibble Palace surrounded by greenery. Dating back to the 1860s, the building was reopened to the public in 2006 following a three year period of restoration work. Visitors flocked in droves to the long lost friend they didn’t realise they missed so much and Kibble Palace was once again reinstated as the West End’s most stylish and iconic buildings.

To many people, the elaborate Kibble Palace structure is the Botanic Gardens which is why its recent rennovation somewhat diluted the atmosphere of the park. Thankfully it is now back, brighter and cleaner, and looks all the better for its time away. The iconic wrought iron-faced glasshouse is an iconic symbol of the West End and houses a variety of plant life and sculptures, as well as a small fish pond which always provides the most entertainment for younger visitors. The intricacies of the plant life on offer here may be lost on me, but a stroll around here never fails to relax you. For that rteason alone it’s good to see the palace back in its rightful place.
