Burger Lunch, March 2015 The burger market in Glasgow is somewhat saturated but I am in no way bored of aiming to consume a burger once a week(or more often!). I’d heard mumblings from people saying they’d had a tasty burger from Tut’s and, if I’m honest, I did not expect them to be on a par with specialist burger joints littering the City Centre. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve eaten at Tut’s half a dozen times or so and enjoyed every meal but my hunch was that the burger would be good, but surpassed by the brioche bun wielding experts. I was wrong. The Tut’s Classic Burger(patty with caramelised onions and mature cheddar) was excellent. The meat was very juicy and flavoursome whilst the caramelised onions added a lovely sweet flavour which the mature cheddar cheese complimented beautifully. After taking a couple of bites I had to try and get another photo(see my blog) to try and illustrate just how juicy(without being too drippy and, well, wet) this champion was. Served on the side were tasty fries, slaw and pickled cucumber(which I liked but Mrs G was not too keen on). I love a pickle and inserted the cucumber into the burger to add a sharpness; fantastic! They do a deal on Monday and Tuesday for 2 burgers and 2 drinks for a tenner. Get your ass down there if you’ve not yet had the joy of a Tut’s burger. Up there with the best in Glasgow.

A Glasgow institution, King Tuts is a must-go if you’re a music fan. It’s one of the best places to see local bands at the start of their career, national and international bands of a certain size, as well as larger bands occasionally playing wee secret gigs for fans only. As far as the important things go, it’s good. You’re always guaranteed a good view of the band(the stage is wee, but high up enough that you can see the band), and for busier gigs, the mezzanine area is a better place to see the band without getting crushed by the crowd. The sound is also good for a venue that size, and they are always good at not putting the volume up too loud so it gets all distorted. It can get a wee bitty warm though, so much so that I’ve seen gigs get stopped early because the sweat dripping off the ceiling has shorted the soundboard! Also, bear in mind that a lot of the gigs finish late(11:30), so if you’re dependent on public transport you may have to leave early. Prices for gigs are pretty decent(anything over £15 is taking the piss), and the drinks are pretty well priced. Downstairs, the bar area has had a wee spruce-up and is looking lovely. I particularly like the concert posters they have used to decorate the place, especially as I have a few similar ones at home. To be honest, I only ever come here before gigs, mainly because it isn’t that close to many other places. I’ve had the food before, and it’s half decent pub grub; nothing to write home about, but pretty good. It deserves the 5 stars mainly because it’s the kind of place that you can go to and enjoy a gig without the venue becoming an issue — you won’t be huffing that you paid too much for it, that you can’t see the band, that the room sounded bad or that you couldn’t get a pint. Whether you have a good time at King Tut’s is definitely down to the band…

Mention King Tuts to my Mr and you’ll be subjected to 20 minutes of puns and jokes; mention it to anyone else in Glasgow and you’ll be treated to stories of who they saw here before they were famous. I think I’m one of the few who haven’t! The bar part had a bit of a revamp a few years back — the menu has been gastro’d up and they do some pretty good, reasonably priced burgers. We most recently gigged here on Friday(Jack Garrettt — seriously, look him up). The place was heaving, with a typically boisterous and good natured Glaswegian crowd. The only reason this is a 4 star review is because their beer was on a par with the Barrowlands in terms of not niceness. Good times!

Can’t compliment the lovely staff can’t do enough, nothing was too much bother for them. We we treated to a wee set, during our food from a support band. As a venue King Tuts is a smashing place to see a band, you’re guaranteed that up close and personal experience, tremendous.

Probably one of the best venues in the world(no kidding), tiny but mythic. 100 people can fit here I think but every gig I attended here was huge!

Love this place. My first gig here was Supergrass with The Bluetones in support(early ’94). Great atmosphere in a very intimate venue although I think it’s lost a little something since they put the barriers in front of the stage(thank you Mr. HSE man). The main bar is a good place for a pint and a blether, friendly staff and good beer. Haven’t eaten there in a while but the last time I did the food was pretty nice and the portion size was good(even on the lunchtime deals). If you’re going to a gig there for the first time, go early, sit downstairs and grab some food and a drink first, I think you’ll enjoy it.

I could gush about this cracking little intimate music venue, but the other reviewers do that so well. So I’m just going to go ahead and leave four complimentary stars for the glorious sweat-fest of live music that is Tut’s. It’s going to get lively; it’s going to get real warm; you’re going to love every second. There’s a reason why Tut’s is loved, both by locals and visitors alike. It’s just shy of the almighty five for several reasons; staff on the door were a little grouchy and the drinks a tad expensive. Gigs tend to finish after 11. This wasn’t a problem for me but, if you’re travelling that bit further to and from the gig, it could be a late one. Regardless, it’s safe to say that King Tut’s is a bit of a Glasgow legend!

I would say this is the best small music venue in Glasgow. Well known for ‘where oasis was discovered’ king tuts is more than that. It’s an amazing venue with lots of character. Downstairs is the bar area plenty tables to sit at and they have a great food menu. Upstairs is the stage I’m not sure of the capacity but I think it’s a few hundred. You go up the stairs on your left is the bar and usually the merchandise area and then to the right is the stage. It is hot and sweaty, which makes you feel closer to the band. Around the edges there are benches which are good fit standing on for a better view. There is a raised area at the back. I love tuts and all is small venue charms, highly recommended. I love the stairs leading up to the venue which has the names of bands that have played there in the past that have made it big.

Amazing gig venue! Went to see Rae Morris there about a month ago, food upstairs is also great for a bite beforehand. Would recommend getting there early though if you want a good spot, not the biggest of venues but nice and intimate!

By far one of the coolest venues in Glasgow. I’ve been fortunate to see some amazing acts here from metal to hip-hop to soul and I’ve never had a bad time. The place is cramped & sweaty at the best of times, but it’s part of the charm of this Glaswegian institution. West brew King Tut’s own beer which at £3.30 is inoffensive and perfectly acceptable to cool you down & get you dancing. Since my last visit they’ve tarted up the bar area, getting rid of the pool table & opening up a couple more tables. Although upstairs is just as cramped as the bar, there’s enough space to squeeze through when you need to. I think part of the charm of this venue is that you can see bands on the way up & down from stardom as well as a number of bands which aren’t on everyone’s radar. Tur’s occupies that healthy middle ground which goes to show why Glasgow’s music scene is one of the best in the UK.

Probably one of the coolest venues for music in Glasgow. I went a few days ago to see Gramatik and the place was absolutely buzzing! This is where the music intelligentia of Glasgow meets, and you’ll find all sorts of(admittedly young) folks there, from different backgrounds and styles. From the art school student to the IT geek, from the young office worker to the tourist visiting for just a couple of days: everyone has heard about Kin Tut’s and wants to go! I managed spending 3,5 years in Glasgow without going: it was about time I made a move. The Gramatik concert was really great. The support artist was a fun hip hop/electro version of Michael Jackson(yes, this exists), and Gramatik just gave an amazing performance. We were dancing and bouncing up and down the whole night! The bar has a decent selection of drinks — I went for cans(yes, CANS, I know this is weird) of Desperados. They did their job! The only minus thing I’d have to mention is that the venue is really small, and so popular that you have to be ready to be a bit cramped and possibly get some drinks spilled on you… but that never kept me from enjoying my night! A definite must go for a good gig!

A cracking venue that gets some surprisingly well known acts in at times. Upstairs venue so there are issues with disabled access, in case that’s an issue for you. Sound is good, layout is nice and the beer is top notch if a little pricey. Staff are really cool as well. HINT: buy your gig tickets direct from the venue and you won’t pay a booking fee. Given that the only alternative is TicketMaster and you could be saving a fiver simply by popping in.

Hot and sticky with sweat dripping from the roof and you’ll be sweltering in 30 seconds. A tiny, hard to navigate venue which is(usually) heaving with people. Sounds like a lot of bad things — but King Tut’s makes it work. For a live music venue, I think it’s hard to rival King Tut’s. There is live music every single night(or very close to that often) and while I’ve not played band potluck in a while, I have seen a shed-load of gigs here. All of them have been awesome, no matter how dire the act on stage actually is. I think King Tut’s is one place that has a consistently good atmosphere for seeing bands, no matter how packed and hot it can get. My preferred standing space is either on the stairs, or right at the very back of the room on the seats. There have been a couple of gigs when I’ve left at the end of the main set purely because of the heat which can make me feel a bit sick — but that’s all part and parcel of seeing a band at King Tut’s. I can’t comment on the bar prices or food as I haven’t eaten or drunk here in a very long time but the door staff for the gigs are always friendly and will try to attach your wristband as delicately as possible. The toilets aren’t much to rave about but for a live music venue they are definitely cleaner than most. My one gripe about this place is having to walk through the smokers on the way out, for some reason the design of the frontage seems to trap more smoke than most places so it can be a suffocating haze.

Bloody awful!!! My girlfriend and I went for a drink here one night and found it to be overpriced and very pretentious. Taken over by the very well to do of Glasgow. We were charged £7.20 for a bottle of Budweiser and a Vodka and Coke! I’d expect to pay that in some upmarket club but not in a so called«intimate rock n roll venue» Not only that as we entered the bar we were started out by many patrons who objected to our alternative style. A bit surprising after all as King Tut’s is supposed to be a «rock n roll venue» If Oasis hadn’t been signed at this bar no one would care about it. Overpriced and pretentious and not what it once was.

Despite living in the same street and only a short distance walk from my home for nearly seven years this was my first time here. I’ve always thought this place as music venue than also a café bar. I was walking home and saw the rain in the distance intact a heavy down pour coming my way & thought l would never make it home in time, so came in for some well deserved lunch. There was only a few people in the bar with some eating pizza, lunch menu was small but adequate for lunch, I opted for the meal deal that was soup and a sandwich, cream of mushroom and a tuna salad sandwich, In most places that l have been in the past you struggle to find any filling, this one was loaded plus the salad. The bar is quite trendy & modern with plenty if items & art work on the wall to look at. On ordering the service was quick with the food ok around average. I’ve never been to a gig here so cannot comment as a venue.

Now this review might be a bit unfair, but it is what it is. My friend and I came here for a drink on a Friday evening. He works near here and recommended their branded beer«tuts» It was sunny and there was a gig on so it was packed with hip young things. Now I’m no scientist but I think the temperature inside was reminiscent of the sun’s core. We stayed outside and sat on the steps. Pretty inconvenient as we were in everyone’s way but outside was busy so there wasn’t really anything else for it. We got ushered inside at 9 pm because of their licence but by that time we had had enough.
Fortunately students are poor so despite being busy we got a beer no problem. I got my pint in a plastic cup. That’s right a plastic cup, fair enough it is a venue for gigs, however, if it is serving joe public along s ide the gig goers it should be serving joe public properly. I thought the pint of tuts was terrible and the plastic cup didn’t help. I wouldn’t count this place out for a gig. However, I will not be coming back here for a drink.

Yes, I am a Yorkshire boy and I had my first night in Glasgow this week. Love the Glasgow crowd. You people are so friendly and down to earth! Anyway… me and my sister by fate walking around found King Tuts, hearing great things from England and thought we’d step in and have a look, ignoring the whole Oasis thing, because I hate Oasis with a passion. On entering this venue, I admit, it wasn’t the prettiest I had stepped in. It’s dingy, a bit sticky and a bit sweaty, but the place had soul and you just have to look around that it’s full of history. Many of your favourite bands and artists have performed here. The beer was cheap(cheaper than many venues in Leeds) and everyone was friendly, though a lil intoxicated. If I was a student in Glasgow I’d have set up camp in here and even have a toothbrush in the bathroom! Pool, a live music venue upstairs, cheap beer, jukebox… Everything a student needs! The band, while they weren’t my thing, the energy and vibe of the venue were amazing. The crowd were really enjoying themselves! Not many people recording footage with cameras at all. Just people jumping, dancing and partying! It’s amazing that a venue so old and established still manages to capture a youthful feel. I definitely recommend this venue to tourists! Not just the NME reading, ‘look at how indie and cool I am’ sort of people either!

I hadn’t been to King Tut’s in many, many years. I was kinda worried what I would find when I returned this week. Would it be neutered by corporate meddling, as a lot of successful places sway towards? Would it be living on past memories? The answer to that, faithful gig goer, is no. Not one little bit. It’s still as cool and as welcoming as it ever was, and still one of the finest gig venues in the country. Split into two distinct parts, the downstairs bar is cosy, featuring plenty of seats, a pool table, and a damn fine bar including a specially King Tut’s lager brewed by local beer kings WEST brewery. Nearer gig time, it will get a bit busy, but the staff must be used to it, they do a fine job. When it’s gig time, you venture upstairs, and there’s another, smaller bar, with a helpful TV over it trained on the stage. Get your drink, then head into the main part of the venue. It’s small. It’s cramped, it’s hot and sweaty, and it’s brilliant. The sound is excellent, the atmosphere is unparalleled anywhere in Glasgow, in my humble opinion, and with the right band, it’s a hell of a night. One tip? Don’t wear a white shirt. You will sweat, it will go see through, and you will be embarrassed.

I cannot fault the place. It is possibly the best live venue in Scotland. Music is what you make of it. If there is a band you know or love then this is the place to see them. King tut’s has a long history of big bands breaking through here and there is a good reason, The hot and sweaty stage area has an incredible atmosphere, small enough to get a good crowd in but to feel all the atmosphere. Great sound and the bands all seem to love playing in there. Food is great, nice burgers and everything looks delicious. The drinks selection are ok but I have had much worse. Staff are all nice and very helpful. It is worth getting a drink in before embarking up stairs for the gig you are going to see. Bar upstairs can get very busy during breaks in the performance but you won’t miss a note while being there.

Famed as the place where Alan McGee signed Oasis, it’s great for bands, but if you’re just on the prowl to have drinks with friends then personally I think it is out of the way of everything else and doesn’t really hit the spot. Surprisngly tasty however for a spot of lunch if you work in the Blythswood Square/St VIncent Street/Bothwell Street area.
