Approach Blindfolded then you’ll be happy There are two types of «I never knew this was here?» Either you pass it by every day and take no notice, or you stumble upon a backwater you never knew existed. And it’s fair to say that The Old Smiddy comes into the latter category, situated in the deepest darkest depths of leafy Cathcart which surprises you that it’s even in a city at all. Well, The Old Smiddy does exist and«Cathcart’s 1st pub» promises so much from the outside. Its whitewashed walls and small cottage like doors & windows give it a charming fishing village abode type feel, but once you stoop your head under the black stone lintel you’re confronted with a standard chain type swirly carpeted establishment. There’s no ye olde world charm once inside. Where are the dark stained floorboards, the Blacksmith’s tools or the old oak beams? The pumped real ale? If the outside indicated what you’d find inside then that would be ‘happy days’. You’d expect Tennents on tap, reasonably priced standard pub grub and that would sit perfectly with your expectations. You’d be Ok with it and think«this is a pretty good pub, with good service where I can watch the footie and eat a burger». In fact the next time I decide to go, I’ll shut my eyes on approach and hope I find the door. Then I’ll be more than happy.

That’s a very lovely place with very attractive prices. The dish I had was well cooked and tasty. The only thing that disappointed me a bit — there was no scotch at the bar. It is a shame since it’s in Scotland :(

This is a proper pub… one that instantly reminds me of an old village pub in deepest England given the wooden beams, old school low ceilings and availability of real ale. The place is really friendly, even though there’s a definite«locals» vibe going on. It attracts all ages and offers good value food too. If you’re in the area, or after somewhere to stop off during an expedition of the Southside, I’d definitely recommend dropping into Ye Olde Smiddeh.

A great local and friendly pub. There is always great food deals on during the day(2 meals for £7 is my favourite) including curry nights and grill nights where you can get a curry and a drink/steak platter and a drink for super cheap(usually less than a tenner). The food area is slightly raised from the rest of the pub which creates an area for families or groups of friends to eat and drink out of the way of the more rowdy area of the bar — this is great while the football is on as you still get the atmosphere of the pub without having to yell over the noise of those watching the football can make. The bar staff are friendly as are the local punters with the customers ranging from families to early teens right up to pensioners all enjoying beer and chat together. Great place to watch the football as the atmosphere is great and open to whatever Old Firm team you may or may not support — no football colours permitted however. Also, there is no risk of trouble due to football team rivalries which can be rare to find in Glasgow. The bar have a zero tolerance policy towards violent behaviour. The quiz on a Monday night is great fun and new teams are always welcome.

Brilliant old style pub. Does good pub grub and drinks at reasonable prices. Really really could do with a beer garden though.

The Smiddy is a good local south side pub. Almost literally in the heart of the Cathcart community, the pub is the setting of many a first legal pint, as it is a favourite with locals both young and old. The Sunday Roast is a good shout. You won’t fall off your seat in awe at the standard of the fare offered, but it’s comforting and reliable. And there is always a pleasant wee atmosphere. Through the week the Smiddy has a number of offers, such as a Thursday night when you get two meals and two drinks for around £9 — pretty good! It comes into its own as a homing point for the Tartan Army. About ten minutes or so walk from Hampden Park; the atmosphere changes from the simple pleasure of a leisurely drink, to the boisterous cries of many a Scottish football fan.
