Often forget about this place, but very reasonably priced vinyl. Have to rummage quite a bit sometimes to find a gem, and then the cat jumps out of nowhere and scares the bejeezus out of you… sometimes the guy randomly drops a 50p or quid off a the price for no reason, which is always nice. Or maybe its for not punching the cat…

Tried this place at various times at the weekend but is always shut. Door was open on a monday so went to enter but some grumpy bloke shouts ‘we’re not open!’. [keep your shirt on, matey] Looked at door sign — supposed to be open 11.30. Time checked at 11.29 so must not be needing any sales.

I was taken here today for the first time by a friend, thanks to this site. I got there too early of course first of all at 1130am. At least I know now it doesn’t open until 1pm lol. I went looking for 7″ vinyl and wasn’t sure what I would find. I have to say it is one of the best second hand record stores I have ever been in. The prices are excellent and extremely fair, lots of vinyl outside with prices starting from 50p with a few crates being 50p each or 10 for £3 which is a bargain. Loads more indoors with CDs and Vinyl throughout. I found several more boxes at £1 each or 10 for £5 so me being me, I thought whats the point of just buying 6 for £6 when I can have ten for £5 lol. The owner was very helpful and found some more boxes of vinyl for me to look through. I came out having spent around £21 with very close to 50 singles. I cannot recommend this store enough. Well worth a visit.

I love having a wander down Ruthven Lane to visit Play It Again, for a good old rummage through the crates filled with musical gems. You’ll find absolutely everything in the way of second hand music here, in the form of CDs, records and even some obscure music books and biographies. The owner is always friendly and highly clued up on the music he’s selling, as well as playing some great background music from his eclectic collection. I particularly like their wee cat, who roams around as nonchalantly and laid back as the place itself.

Play It Again Records is such a nice little record shop that I almost don’t want to tell you about it. I used to run wild after school, up and down Byres Road and round its side streets on my BMX. Ruthven Lane has a lot of great memories for me. It’s a hidden gem for those of you who like to rummage through boxes of 2nd hand bargains. Don’t go expecting anything other than a bunch of vinyl junkies crammed into a small space and raking for a treasured rarity. You won’t find The Killers in here but rather, a little lesson in pop music history. Amongst the boxes of relatively organised records, there are also 2nd hand retro tape decks and players to be snapped up. There is something a bit sad about seeing old and unused equipment stacked away and without an owner but in all honesty, I couldn’t think of a better home for them than this.

Play it Again is a wonderful gem of a shop hidden in the depths of Ruthglen Lane. Pick your time to visit it carefully, though, as the owner tends to open up shop only when he really wants to(i.e. give the early morning visit a miss). Although you will find some CDs and tapes — the only real reason for visiting ‘Play it Again’ is the vinyl. Don’t have a record player? No problem, there are always four or five on sale in the shop. I bought one of them for my boyfriend’s birthday a few months back — it’s a 70s player, works perfectly, and was mine for the bargain price of £35. Buying it wasn’t hugely easy though — I got the feeling that the owner didn’t really want to sell anything. I suppose in some ways it’s good that he wasn’t being an over eager salesman — but he was apathetic to the point of being a little unhelpful! The record selection is amazing, though, and you could easily pass an hour or two in here without even noticing. There are piles and piles of records on every available surface, and you feel a little like you’re in a really cool jumble shop. There’s always something different on the owner’s own record player, which makes for a good atmosphere. And the shop even has it’s very own cat, who potters around the store and sits down on exactly the pile of records that you were going to flick through next. Or the ones that you’ve just bought. Whichever would mean that he was most in the way! Prices are cheap at Play it Again — most albums are priced around £3/£4 and you’ll find bargain £1 boxes galore. Just yesterday my boyfriend came home with a T-Rex album that he bought for a £1. Doesn’t get much better than that. Oh, and please note — Play it Again is cash only. They don’t have any new-fangled things like credit card machines.
