Was really disappointed with the cake I received from Top Tier. It was for my mums 70th and I wanted something special rather than the usual shop bought cake. The cake was chosen from one of their books and was designed to look like a party table with small sandwiches, cakes, teacups etc on it. To personalise it, I asked if the figure of a toddler could be added, standing reaching up as if trying to grab something to eat off the table. I was told this was no problem and charged an extra £5 on top of the £55 for the cake. Having given plenty of notice(weeks), I was told I could only collect it after 1pm on the pick-up day. I turned up to find a cake which was much smaller than had been described and with the figure of a small boy sitting down at the front of the cake, on the cake board. I explained that this was not what was asked/paid for and that it would mean nothing as reaching up to grab was my son’s ‘thing’(he never sits down!!). At first they suggested that ‘I’ take the cake to their West End shop to get it fixed but then did offer to take the cake themselves. Unfortunately I had to take the cake to the hotel that afternoon along with other party decorations and therefore had no time to leave the cake & come back for it so they knocked the £5 off that they had charged. Although really unhappy with this, I thought that the cake itself looked nice enough — wrong! The icing sugar over the cake which was supposed to represent a tablecloth, was hard and the cake itself was as dry as a stick. The ‘buttercream’ tasted more like a cheap margarine cream and I was horrified as I watched the relatives & friends lifting some to try it incase they thought I had scrimped on my mothers special birthday. So much for spending more on a special occasion — In future I’ll stick with good old M&S birthday cakes which can always be relied on to taste delicious at a fraction of the price!
