I’ve been going to Urban Funk for 5 years for a reason. This isn’t a typical East end barbers its a gents hairdressers. The new shop has been open for over a year and what a transformation it’s had. This is a cool place with a mix of people including hipsters with their checked shirts and beards, typical East end lads, trendies, dads and kids. Music can be a little loud and heavy for my taste but that’s a minor complaint. It’s good lads that work in there, friendly and good at their job. For £12.50 I get a booked appointment, hair washed, hair cut and styled(not a set of clippers in sight) and open razor on back of neck and sideys. Even get a cup of tea or coffee or if feeling naught a wee beer at weekend. This would cost £25+ in city centre. Place is packed so book in advance. Give it a try!

Despite sounding like a condition suffered by those who have spent to much time in the city and crave some country time, this joint is a tiny little oasis of modernity in an area that is in all honesty about 10 to 15 years behind the rest of Glasgow when it comes to… well…everything really. With a funky exterior that must have looked to the locals like the work of magical trolls, the devil or Paul Daniels and a nice bright funky(in a very urban type way.?) interior, this is a cool we joint in context. With reasonable pricing, trendy staff and a good range of reputable products on offer, Urban Funk is a one off in the area. Will it be enough to tempt in the funkier folk in the area? OR will they prefer to make the quick jaunt into town? we shall see. If you too suffer from or think you may be getting Urban Funk then i recommend getting your ass into the country… dont worry its not fatal.

It’s refreshing to see somewhere on Duke Street amongst the many many hairdressers and barbers, that caters to the young and stylish male. Urban Funk stands out from the surrounding dull doorways on the street, with its bold black and orange painted entrance, so I was intrigued enough to go inside. My first impressions were good, as the guy that worked there was nicely styled with good hair, which confirmed the cool image of the place and portrayed the results of their expertise. The guy that worked there was friendly and chatty when I asked for a price list, informing me that it was only £10 for a cut and shampoo, which impressed me, compared with the big name salons in town. This place strikes a nice balance between stuffy old out of date barbers and high priced hair salons, providing something for the modern man who takes care of his mullet as well as his wallet.
