Fantastic pub with rooms a stone’s throw from Shiplake station, or a lovely plod down the Thames path fromHenley. Big garden, summer BBQs, superb food, a great selection of drinks and great staff all conspire to make this a place to go. A tad on the steep side — but you get what you pay for and, ultimately, I can find nothing whatsoever to complain about.

Came here today for lunch. I had run past it before but it doesn’t look too prepossessing from the front. We booked a table and sat in the back garden in the gorgeous sunshine. There were offering a barbeque set menu today so you got to see your food cooked outside by the chef. I had the sausages and my friend had the burger. We got to choose from an array of salads set up at the bbq. The kids had sausages and fries. The place was clean, it was bight inside too, and the food was good for pub grub. The Eton Mess was ‘a bit boring’, in my friend’s words. The children thought the triple chocolate brownie to be a little too chocolatey for them, although the accompanying vanilla ice cream was very good. Even better, there is a reasonably sized children’s play area around the back. There is a definite ‘help yourself’ attitude to serving, so as soon as you realise that you have to sort your own cutlery, napkins etc, you get less cross with the staff. Will come here again.
