I think you can judge a fish and chip shop by one criterion. How long is the queue on a Friday evening at about 6pm? If willing customers are lining up out of the door, down the street and round the corner, then you know you’re on to a winner. And Montefiore Fisheries is definitely popular. You always have to wait. I’m a sucker for their cod and chips(even if cod is a bit of a treat). I can also heartily recommend the haddock and the fish cakes. Lovely chips every time. It’s worth waiting for proper chips. I stroll back to my flat with them wrapped in paper, enjoyng the smell of vinegar wafting out. My only quibble would be that these guys shut quite early. If they could bring themselves to keep going, until even 10pm, I’d be even more happy. But then, this is a proper chippy. It’s not a six pint, post pub kebabery.

This is a very popular local chippie, which gets very busy during the early evening. It’s a take-away only, ie no in-house eating. The food is very traditional — fish and chips, pies, pasties, battered and unbattered sausages, saveloys, fish-cakes, curry sauce they do ‘meal deals’ for certain items eg two-fish cakes and chips. The Chinese owners are very fast and efficient. The only thing to be aware of is that they tend to close mid-evening, as soon as the supper-time rush has gone ie they are not open after you’ve been to the pub!
