Nice pub just outside of Huddersfield train station. Real ales and ciders! Good place to visit

This looks like it was the original bar and buffet if the station. Its clean spacey but I would not call it exaclty welcoming. It serves real ale several in fact but the quality at time of visit was not great.

If you’ve never been for a rail ale trail before, whether an official one or a slightly more personalised one, I can highly recommend the jaunt having partaken recently. The Head of Steam was our first port of call, of many destinations that we aimed to visit en route back to Leeds, but if you look in to it properly I’m sure you could begin further out. The pub was immediately likeable, and easy to access directly from the station. Really enjoyed the 3D picture on the wall, and the friendly staff as well. Sadly, as I was aiming to remain standing by the end, I opted for the weakest beer which was Amber Necker, Pennines Brewery. Depends on how you like your ale, but I found it pretty watery(even by 3.5% standards) and it had an odd smokey taste afterwards. My companions however, really enjoyed their brews, so there’s more to delight in if you’re not so boozey shy. All in all, it made for a great start to the excursion!

Had some good meals here in the past, but yesterday’s was absolutely dreadful. Rock hard veg that tasted like they’d gone straight from the freezer to the microwave(for far too long), chewy chicken, watery gravey, items missing from the plate and very, very slow service. Complained, but no sign of the manager clearly they don’ care too much for unsatisfied customers(customers who’ve been coming to this pub longer than they have, I might add not that we’d go back now). Also a lot of loud swearing coming from the kitchen throughout the whole meal. From now on we’ll go to Weatherspoons instead sad to see The Head of Steam lower its standards so much. Avoid.

Haven’t been in here very much but I’ve been here about 3 times in the last 2 months and it’s been pleasant :) You walk in and the walls are covered with train memorabilia, so loads of signs, pictures etc. The staff all seem really nice. They serve food there too from I think 11am(maybe 12 noon?) until 9pm every night and it’s all homemade foods. Prices are OK too and I think I saw that they do Sunday lunch there too but I’ve not tried it. They have direct access to Platform 1 at the train station too. Also there is a local meet-up there 2 Tuesdays per month with a group that basically gets together and does fun things throughout the month so you can make friends etc. They’re called ‘Kirklees-Calderdale Social Group’ I still haven’t got round to meeting them lol oops.

This is a nice looking building in an ideal location with fantastic architecture & comfortable seating If you’re a lager or bottled beer drinker its probably the place for you but if you like good quality real beer you will not be happy, I have been giving it a second chance once a month for years & it just doesn’t get any better. If you like good beer my advise is when you walk into the pub keep going past the bar & out of the back door, this will lead you to the railway platform, make your way to platform 8, get an 8 min train to Dewsbury station bar where the ale & staff are great, you will be catching it again.

A great building, with a brilliant selection of beers — the Head of Steam is spoiled a little by its multiple personalities. The Head of Steam I like is the real ale pub by the train station, with its two front rooms full of railway paraphernalia and live blues and jazz on several times a week. The Head of Steam I dislike serves mediocre food in an ambience-free, canteen styled room round the back. There are grubby condiments on all the tables in every room, two fruit machines and a TV that regularly blares out Sky sports. Unfortunately, they’re the same pub. As a result, there’s a funny mix of punters too. Some are there for the beer and the jazz — but there’s also a «towny» vibe to some of the customers. It attracts daytime drinkers and office workers on works parties. The owners should really decide what they want to do with the Head of Steam. If they catered more carefully for one audience or the other, they might be surprised to at how well they do out of it…

Good selection of drinks, bar staff are awesome, I’ve only ever been here on a Wednesday when the live jazz band are playing but I’m sure its as good every other night.

Not a great fan but a lot of my friends are. Fantastic building is inside the train station which is regulalrly touted as the finest rail architechture in England by everyone who obviously has not been to St Pancras. Seems to have everying going for it very large selection including lots of real ale but I never make a beeline for it. Maybe it is because you get the impression people are only in for a quick one before catching the train to Manchester.

What a great place. Great for when you have a bit of a wait for a train or are meeting up with friends to have a good night out. Staff are friendly and usually you get served quite quickly. Usually very busy on a weekend. I love all the signs and stuff on the walls, looks awesome.

I second everything in the other reviews, but why haven’t they mentioned the live music, particulary the Jazz? It’s great, especially in summer when they have tables outside on St Georges Square. Also a good selection of real ale.

The Head of Steam is a wonderful pub and handily located onto the platform of Huddersfield station(which is very handy for nipping in if your train is running late). The pub has a really friendly homely feel to it and is a great place to relax, with lovely comfy seats. The staff are very friendly and the service is very good, I was a regular here during my time in the town as a student. I find it far better than the Head of Steams in other towns in cities, and is well worth a visit if you are in the area.

This pub has an excellent selection of real ales at a good price and excellent food. The food is homecooked on the premises and tastes that way as well. There is a cosy welcoming atmosphere and a well equiped games room at the back. One of the best pubs in Huddersfield and you can roll straight out and onto the train!

Head of Steam is in my opinion the best pub in Huddersfield. Located in the Trainstation building with four massive rooms its a gem. The bar staff are friendly and the foiod, which is all cooked on the premises is excellent. The three course Sunday Lunch rocks, I used to eat there every Sunday and still would if I lived in Huddersfield. There is a massive range of drinks, including to the extreme appreciation of my mate Budweiser on tap. They also do nice tea and coffee. The Head of Steam is a great place to while away the hours, I often pop in for a drink before catching a train. On a summers day its nice to sit outside on the Square watching people go by.
