I would say I wasn’t sure whether this place was a gay pub but then again when I visited I was stood opposite two very handsy lesbians who were practicing CPR on each other right in front of the quiz machine I was waiting to use like some intimidated child, or a peeping tom who’s too lazy to hide. With its array of sports screens, blaring karaōke and pool tables dominated by an army of regulars, Jupiter’s Bar is a pretty tacky, downmarket place. It’s only slightly improved by the friendly hullabaloo of everybody present, a laughing mismatch of the human race who start arguments and conversations simultaneously and at the drop of a hat.

If you’re looking for a gay bar with a sporty edge, this is the place for you. Located in Liverpool’s Gay Quarter, The Jupiter, or Jupiter’s… everyone seems to have a different name for it(Jupe-Jupe? L’Jupite? Piter Bread? I just keep them coming) but the main thing to know is that it’s popular and it seems to be one of the few gay bars I’ve come across that seems to understand that its clientele, whatever their sexual persuasion, might want to watch sports too. Because of its location it’s considered a gay bar but it’s probably more gay friendly as you’ll find a mixed bag of peeps in there. There’s a heck of a lot of focus on the pool table and the camaraderie and competitiveness seem to be very fun and tongue in cheek. Plenty of screens for games provide entertainment, and if pool’s not your game there is a quiz machine, but if you fancy getting social with your team mates there is a games night on Wednesdays or karaōke at the weekends. Competitive karaōke. Now that’d be worth seeing. The décor seems a little rushed, with very low ceilings and somewhat blank canvases begging for a bit of personality, thus the place can have a little bit of a cold feel. Still, the crowds make up for it, and their boisterousness is infectious. It’s a happy place, carefree and full of friends, and because of that it gives the G word back its double meaning.

Just on the edge of Liverpool’s Gay Quarter. Friendly and airy pub. Pool table, entertainment through the week.
