Abbey be good! I love places that are fairly new as I have Unilocaled on many occasions previously, everything is in super functional order. As much as you scrub it out and polish it though the bottom line is this is pub grub. Thus the quality of the food has a limited appeal. Now countryside pubs are a different kettle of fish, I like them for the pedestrian pace of life soothes me, as does the local crowd. Pubs in city centres however aren’t for me. It does however have a great night life which is strange yet quite a pleasant surprise. I for one am an avid fan of the faster pace of music. The Indy phase that most white middle class kids went through past me by, probably because I’m neither white nor middle class!!! The class system is bull anyway, mainly because we are all middle class in this country just to different levels. Upper class is smaller than ethnic minorities in this country. I think the label of middle, upper and lower class is redundant in this Island we reside on. Anyway, I prefer house or electro music to Indy/alternative/guitar music. Not that I don’t like it, I just prefer the club music as it doesn’t aspire to have some clever subplot like a lot of the Indy stuff does in its lyrics. Lyrics written while high on drugs are genius but works of a delusional mind in my book, nothing clever about it! Electronic music is minimal and based on simplicity which is always best and I prefer it! A more than viable option to pop into !!

The Abbey is a beautifully laid out gastropub located next to Buffet Star in Hanover Street. There is a wonderful bar area as you approach the cosy dining area with a relaxing space to eat alone or with a small group. During the night, the place comes alive and becomes a popular clubbing venue. This morning, I went for a large breakfast for £3.99(served until 12pm). I chose my table number and my meal was served within 10 minutes. The content of the breakfast was fine but it was grease filled and a bit on the chargrilled side. The toast was also cold and slightly burnt. Even though this wasn’t the best breakfast I’ve had in town, the dining experience and service was pleasant. However, I felt there could have been some air conditioning as there was a lack of chill on such a warm day it was. A mediocre experience.

A brash, thumping city centre bar, the Abbey is surprisingly not as scummy as you’d expect from the state of Hanover Street’s pedestrians. Indoors, you can purchase jelly shots to your heart’s content although sucking insanely on the rim of a shot glass nearly flipped my windpipe inside out. It’s not really my kind of place, pulsing dance music repels me like hoovers scare pets, but it’s not an awful place to go to advance your drunkening.

Thank god this building has finally found a decent venue! When I started University this was Barracuda, a tacky student venue in which all the sports teams would fight over tan streaked birds and footy results. Next it changed to Varsity, which was equally unappealing and unpleasant. But alas, now. The Abbey! The Abbey is a perfect venue for having a bite to eat, a catch up with mates, and watching the footy. They have loads of TV screens and plenty of comfy seating areas. They have a great pub food menu which is of average price range(£4.99 Burger, £3.00 Wraps, £1.99 Bowl of Chips etc). The bar staff know what they’re doing and the service is great. On match days the place gets rammed and I have waited ten minutes for a pint in the past, but this can be expected. This venue is ideal for an after work pint or a Sunday afternoon get together with friends. I know that it opens late at weekends, but can’t comment on what it’s like after 10pm as I’ve only ever been there mid to late afternoon.

The Abbey underwent a refurb a while ago and this has been a sound investment, the place is great. There are different themes including The Liver Lounge which is usually hired privately for office parties;and The Season of ’86 is perfect for chilling out with a few drinks and watching the sport on the big screen. The food is fab too, nothing better than grabbing a pub lunch while watching the game, or just popping in whilst your out shopping. It’s location and friendly, relaxed atmosphere really attracts the professionals and students alike. It’s always buzzing but in a really chilled out way. Recommended for the World Cup!

There’s been a lot of talk about The Abbey, one of the newest bars in Liverpool, and its location on the ever-popular Hanover Street in the centre certainly gives it plenty of attention. It’s a friendly sort of bar with an bustling atmosphere and an elegant simplicity that lends itself well to a few drinks after work or suchlike. There is some yummy pub grub to be had here with the likes of hot melts and wraps(all served with chips), sandwiches and light bites like breaded garlic mushrooms, chunky potato wedges topped with cheese, hearty soup, their own twist on a prawn cocktail, and their superb sharers like loaded nachos, wings and combo platters and some very special chip bowls with the option of curly fries topped with cheese, chilli, baked beans, salsa or BBQ sauce, mushy peas, or mushroom or a variety of other stuff alone or in combo. Mains like salads, pies, fish and chips, burgers and sausage and mash make up the rest of the menu alongside and some very scrummy desserts. You can get some expertly mixed cocktails or a good range of beers, so it’s great to kick back here but as a nightclub it’s a little generic, opening seven days a week and offering your average funky house and cheesy classics. Still, it’s nice to know the place still has a party atmosphere in the wee small hours long after the post-work wind-down. With tasty and substantial food and a central location it’s definitely a good spot to relax and munch some grub.
