The Square is in a nice little corner of Allerton Road that you would assume gets a fair few passers by and does good business with the youth of today. However, the only time I’ve ever been in and stayed, there was a middle aged woman with screaming children accompanying her, and a few elderly couples scanning the newspapers. It seems The Square is the place where atmosphere goes to die, and to be honest I’m surprised it has lasted — it must be surviving purely off various pensions by now! The coffee is good in a standard Starbucks style, but the place is sadly lacking in imagination and quite dull. I found myself drinking as fast as I could and scalding my mouth in the process.

There are quite a lot of funky coffee shops on Allerton Road so the competition must be quite fierce in the area. The Square looks as funky and trendy from the outside as any other coffee shop but in the inside it’s very different. The only clientel seem to be old people. The couple of times I’ve been there I have been the only person under 70. No students or young people and you know the way most coffee shops seem to have a really American over-friendly atmosphere. Like ‘have a nice day’. This place is different. I think the girls who work here are Eastern European and they are miserable! On the plus side, the mocha here is very good.
