This is the quintessential British fish-and-chips shop. They offer several different kinds of fish that are skillfully fried. Portions are large and very good value for the money. Every time I am in London I seek this place out for a good meal. I enjoy the plaice, haddock, or cod depending on my mood. The fryers really do know their craft! Inside is clean, tidy, and vintage. Formica obviously lasts a long time. There is no pretense or posturing here with the food, décor, and staff. They serve great fish traditionally prepared in a simple environment. Located very near the British Museum, it is worth the short walk. I recommend this shop to everyone who wants the real deal without the high price and pretense.

We came here because I read it was one of few places to still fry their fish and chips in beef fat. However, I don’t think the actual frying was very good. In most cuisines(and for me personally) the best deep frying is the one that can be wrapped in paper with the paper coming off dry. I don’t know whether that’s the case with fish and chips, but if it is, The Fryer’s Delight just isn’t very good. It was very greasy and so heavy that we couldn’t even finish half of our meal. There was also not nearly enough acidity, and as we took our meal to go we couldn’t add any. We did buy a pickled onion which was a bit messy to eat, but it really saved the meal. Without that acidity, it was too one-note to have more than a couple of bites.

So according to Unilocal and Google Fryers Delight is open now. We walked all the way there only to find out they’re CLOSEDALLSUNDAY. So beware of their ambiguous opening hours!

Best fish and chips in London. Huge portions and delicious mushy peas make this a perfect dinner or post-drink indulgence. Plus, there’s a good chance you’ll have to share your booth with a stranger, making it even more of an adventure!

Not a bad chippy, just a little bit pricey for what is was. At just under 9 pounds, I got cod, chips and mushy peas. The fish was a little disappointing as it was made up of lots of batter and not too much cod. The chips had quite a few ends in there. The best thing was the mushy peas. Absolutely delicious. All in all, not a bad place to visit and my lowish score is probably a result of being spoilt back home in the North with lots of fish and chips.

Portions are huge. Tried mushy peas for the first time here, which is a pretty big thing in London and it was interesting. It wasn’t amazing but it’s something worth a try if you’re in London. I really liked the chips. Unfortunately you have to pay for tartar sauce? 40p a pack. It’s a small little place but that’s where I hear you get the best fish and chips!

After hearing about this place from friends, it was definitely in my list of things to try in London! It lived up to my expectation, that’s for sure. In the day and age of fancy coffee shops and hipster food trucks, it always feels good to enter a classic chippy. There’s something nice and real about these almost tacky colours everywhere, somethings that just tells you that«this is it, no bullshit». My friends and I decided to wait 5 – 10 minutes for a booth to be free and eat there, while a number of people came in and out to get their fish and chips as take-away. While we were waiting they asked us fif we wanted any fish, to start preparing it. Haddock, chips and mushy peas. The batter of the fish was light and nice, so extra kudos. Really, it’s all you’d want for a fish and chips place. I mean, what else could you possibly expect?

I think I may not be a fish and chips kind of guy. I’ve always found it a tad bland, but thought going to a well-regarded fish shop would change my mind. Unfortunately it didn’t. While advertised as a take-away place, Fryer’s Delight also has 5 booths of seating and table service. I had the haddock and chips. It was crispy and a huge single piece of fish. Tartar sauce is extra and is just packets. It’s a no-frills place, with nice employees, but I can’t imagine wanting to go back. Also, they don’t serve alcohol, so plan accordingly.

Not bad! After being in London for a few days already eyeing different places that served fish & chips, I found this to be a satisfactory place to order it, given its location and price. While it was just a tad on the greasy side, I still liked it. I ordered the cod and it came with with a very large portion of piping hot chips.

I decided to try this place again. The more London gentrifies and the fancier it becomes, the more I want parts of its crumbled, bedraggled past to remain and keep it all a bit real. Nothing has changed inside Fryer’s Delight in the two and a half years since I set foot in here. Which is no surprise as it might not have changed since before I was born. The only thing that needed to change for me to like this place a lot was the freshness of the fish. And that is one thing that has, thankfully, changed since my last visit. The fish was good enough to bump up my previous rating to 4 whole stars. I would have left skipping, if I hadn’t been so full I could barely walk. Remember this is a «chippy» and the food comes with no frills. However, it is good enough not to need any. And stepping inside is like stepping back in time. There aren’t many places left you can buy time travel AND good fish for a tenner.

The best chippy in London. Ask for the fish skinned, a cup of tea on the side and a can of shandy for backup. Some mushies too. Everything is traditional. It’s like walking into a tasty timewarp. Every time I’m in London I make a point of going in here. Cash only.

I believe this is what you’d call a right and proper«chippy.» There’s no bullshit here but that’s exactly why you end up trusting or at least buying into it… There are about four red laminate booths, tiled floors, and a menu that has probably been the same since they opened(adjusted for inflation?). The waitress plunks down plate(or platter… certainly big enough to call it that) straight from the counter — a big ol hunk of golden fish, three handfuls of fries, a wedge of lemon and off you go. Salt shaker and bottle of malt vinegar are on the table. All are crucial for bringing out the flavor, but also especially because they make the«Fish&Chips» experience everything you imagined. A burly man hauled up wire-baskets-full of their chunky squarecut potatoes from a rather dodgy looking basement, at least 3x while we ate, which means they go through them like crazy. In other words, when it comes to frying this place knows what they’re doing and they do it a lot(which came first? who knows, but it’s a good cycle to get stuck in).

This is an old school fish place. It still has a bunch of 60s fixtures in here. And if it was in L.A. it would have a «Film location available» sign placed somewhere. It’s really kitsch or whatever that would be in England. The owner’s are the third pair of hands to run this place. I do wonder does it take three blokes to run this small shop? We ordered fish and chips of course. We skipped on the bread and butter which is very old school side dish… look how it’s served. So cool! Pic: — Cup of tea — Haddock and chips $ 13 — Cooked fresh and served with mushy peas side $? Pic: — Cute traditional London $free and priceless Pic: Pic :

If I had lunch here everyday I’d very quickly consume enough salt to drown a baby seal. That’s because I love salt. And I love chips. And I love fish. The food here reminds of my childhood, back in the days where I still had taste buds that hadn’t been clogged with the lovely filth of excess. Anything powerful enough to break through to what lies beneath is certainly worth a few stars in my mind. I love their chip butty. It is of excellent quality. Soft fluffy chips, fried to a light crispy coating, and lots of melty butter in the roll. It is also excellently priced for food so superior to nearby competitors. The service is brusque, but then it is a fish and chip shop so it is to be expected to an extent. I just wish they’d added more salt. I asked for lots of it. All I ever want is more salt.

This used to be a brilliant fish and chips place where you could eat in or take away but the last visit was not so good for me. Maybe an off day.

I walked past this place a number of times on my way to work and was curious — it looked greasy, the décor was dated… always a sign of quality. So I came here and ordered some fish and chips and was thoroughly amazed. Chips were of that mushiness that one expects, and fish was pulled straight out of the fridge, battered and deep fried in front of my eyes. The fish was super fresh — flaky, and there was still that shiny rainbowy sheen on the finished fish. When in the mood for fish and chips, I’ll be back.

Fast fish food. Breading — 3 stars, crunchy not overly thick Chips — 3 stars, thick cut, moderately oily but not terribly savory Fish — fresh but a tad rubbery and overdone Malt vinegar — bland and tasteless Price — reasonable for portion size Decent enough fish and chips for takeout but nothing worth a trip. I’ve had better fish and chips outside of the UK.

There comes a time in one’s life where you travel to the far ends of the earth(this term is relative) and search out what is the best of something. Seeing as I’m from San Diego California in the US, the UK is pretty dang far for me. What else is London known for food wise other than fish and chips? We searched for a place for lunch and recalled we were suggested Fryers Delight by an old school friend of mine. We went, we sat, we ate and boy were we surprised. When they plopped down a plate full of chips and half a fish, We thought we should have ordered half the amount and shared. The fish was beautifully cooked(Not overdone and not greasy) and the taste was good. Unfortunately, they were out of some of the fish we wanted to try but we made the best of what we had. I would love to go to other places in London and try this staple dish but alas, the body can only take so much fried food before I have to pay for two plane tickets to get my glutinous butt over there.

Holy. Freaking. COW. THISISWHATFISHISSUPPOSEDTOTASTELIKE, Y’ALL! You know how New York City has that trans fat ban? Well… I never thought much of it and happily chowed down on my A Salt & Battery fish and chips like a happy little camper. Then I came to The Fryer’s Delight, and mine eyes doth opened.* Ignorance, dear friends, is not bliss. On my search for fish and chips, I was walking through Hyde Park and decided to whip out the trusty ol’ Blackberry. Time Out London delivered and recommended The Fryer’s Delight as a «Cabbies’ Favourite.» Right there, you already know(1) it can’t be THAT expensive if cabbies are regulars and(2) it must be pretty«authentic» because we all know how notoriously curmudgeony and London-local London cabbies are known to be. An unpretentious storefront and English accents abound — I have a good feeling about this place. And Time Out London does not steer me wrong. Flavor explosions of fresh, crisply fried, succulently meaty fish. Good gawd. I died and went to fishy heaven. «She sleeps with the fishes» has taken on a whole new, fabulously wonderful meaning. Trans fat, I now recognize you for who you are, and I have never been happier to make such an acquaintance!* Sure, you can go to Bibendum for a damn good serving of fish and chips, but seriously… why not save your squids and come make friends with trans fat and its cousin cholesterol at The Fryer’s Delight instead?* Trust me… you and your taste buds will leave here delighted. ****************** * Please note that recent communications have indicated that the fried goodness emerging from this institution is not trans fat-inclusive, but rather derived from beef drippings, which may contain trace amounts of naturally occurring trans fat, but which is not the artificially-created type that is banned in NYC(as far as I’m aware). Regardless… beef drippings??? I hate to say it, but… that sounds even BETTER. Nom nom nommmmmm!
