Grays Inn Cafe

I really want to like Grays Inn Café. Lots of my friends do, and I end up going there for lunch too frequently considering it’s just never gotten me excited about it.
The food is alright. They give large portions… the things in previous reviews are definitely true. But the tough parts for me is that the food isn’t that great, so even though I have lots of it, it’s not really making me happy. Also the process of ordering totally stresses me out, because it’s pretty chaotic and I never really feel like I’m totally sure they’ve understood my order or that I will get what I want.
They’re really well located for the lunchtime crowd, and their prices are reasonable. I can’t say that I absolutely hate it, as I keep going back, but maybe someday I’ll find something I love that I know they understand when I order it, and everything will be much better for me. Until then… I guess I’ll keep trying.

Thanks to my dear friend Stephen, I’ve discovered this little gem. Wish I knew about Grays Inn Café a lot sooner, but better late than never.
For 5 pounds you can get a hell of a lot of food. The sandwiches are huge, the salads are huge, everything I’ve seen is… you guessed it… HUGE. You get massive quantity for what you’d pay for something small anywhere else. Not only that, but the ingredients are fresh and tasty. I have a little soft spot for the Grilled Salmon Salad, but everything that I’ve tried is good.

Dwarfed beside the massive behemoth that is the ITN Studio on Grays Inn Road, the small shape of the Grays Inn Café sits. A simple affair, with the ground floor hosting a large counter and an open kitchen, and a slightly gloomy, but charmingly simple collection of chairs and tables for those who want to eat in, the bare wood floors and table surfaces exuding a slight air of rustic french farmhouse which gives appeal to the place. The speciality here lies with the breakfasts, which, although popular, seem only for patrons popping in to get a coffee and a croissant before running back to their busy lives (with the odd celebrity popping in from the newsroom next door). I’ve found it’s much more pleasant to allow oneself an extra half hour, pick up one of the deliciously enormous bacon or sausage sandwiches (made with doorstep slices of farmhouse loaf), and take your fare downstairs to the oft empty seating area, where you can sit in the peace and quiet, enjoy your meal, and ponder on the day to come. Prices are a little above average (bacon sandwich and a coke will stretch you to about £4.20 seated, £3.50 if not), but I think it’s worth it for the generous portions and the quality of the food.
