Never again. Just after taking the fifth oyster shell out of my mouth and about to polish off my sixth, I noticed movement on the shell of the fifth one. Right at the lip, which had well and truly gone in my mouth, I discovered a marine worm of some sort, complete with numerous legs all of which were wriggling and contorting. What I could see of it was about an inch in length, although this could well have just been its tip as it was properly ensconsed within the scalloped shell. The owner’s reaction to being told? «At least you know it’s organic.» After a brief and insincere apology, a glass of champagne was delivered to the table. «Our way of saying sorry.» Fine, but I don’t drink alcohol. When it came to dessert, the allure of the dark chocolate mousse was too much and I gave in. I was presented with something the colour of a Cadbury’s milk chocolate bar. Although perfectly edible, I didn’t finish it all as it just wasn’t what my taste buds were craving. I wasn’t asked for my opinion on it, despite leaving it far from finished, but I decided to let them know anyway. Even though the dessert was actually ok(just not as described on the menu), it was deducted from my bill. The oysters however, remained at full charge. It’s a simple matter of not taking due care and attention to clean the oysters properly. It’s not a difficult task, but does need to be done correctly. Rick’s Café simply didn’t care. This attitude, food and service is not one I wish to re-visit and pay good money for. Very disappointing.

VERYBADFOOD I went to Rick’s café in Tooting Broadway for brunch and it was a disappointment. I had chorizo scrambled eggs and it was awful. Overall, — the food was bad — very expensive for what we got — it is located on a busy road — bad service All my 4 friends had the same opinion.

Sadly, rather pathetically lacklustre food and service. The dining room is cramped and small, and the menu reads a lot more excitingly than it tastes. Food is modern european, simple and fresh, it’s just a little bland and the whole experience seems inspired by someone who thinks magnolia is an exciting colour to paint the walls.
