While visiting London, I needed to freshen up razor fade and found these gents. I had an excellent experience. I go to the barber about once a week and can say that my barber(who was the son of the owner) did a very professional job from start to finish. Despite a previous review, these guys are bilingual and speak English well and I didn’t have a problem at all communicating my requests. The shop has about 4 chairs, is very clean, and warm(on a cold day). Prices were the best in town for what I got in return. This place is not trendy, rather, uses Turkish barber techniques in a modern setting. For instance, my barber used a flame to burn off my ear hair — very cool. So if you are looking for trendy, go elsewhere — or try coming here for a solid shave. All the gents were very friendly.

Had I checked the previous reviews I would have demanded a Chinese Toilet Brush Cut, which is apparently all the rage in this part of town. Instead all I got was a nowhere near as fashionable No.2 at the sides, short/spiky on top and two cups of Turkish coffee. I only came here because I work near here and of the three barbers along Whitecross Street this was the only one that was a) reasonably priced and b) available to start work immediately. The barbers are proper Turkish, proper Turkish as in their English vocabulary is limited to that required to discuss the tonsorial arts. The hair cuts are efficient, they use a fresh razor for trimming and strange burning alcohol stick thing for burning off ear hairs(which I do not have but assume is all part of the service). They brought me two espresso size cups of the sweet rocket fuel that is Turkish Coffee and charged £14 for the entire experience. They are characters and I’m sure they would have met with the approval of Priss Fotheringham, the most famous deceased resident of Whitecross Street who ran a very baudy pub and was reckoned in the 1660s to have been the second best prostitute in London.

I got my hair cut here, despite my prior reading of Tim L’s review, because it is close to the office and I was intrigued by Tim’s «toilet brush» look. Unfortunately, I didn’t experience any racial profiling or dictatorial hair styling. This is a cool place if you want the Turkish barber experience.

Where’s that zero star option Unilocal?!This place needs one. I walk in asking for a short back and sides. I mean seriously, how hard is it to screw up a short back and sides?! The proprietor thinks he knows better and asks me if I’m Chinese — I say no. He looks confused, but says, I give you best hair cut for a Chinese. I mean, what’s my race got to do with what I ask for. He says, your hair, short back no good. I say, I want it that way. We carry on with this sort of banter back and forth and he gives me a short back and sides, and I say, just trim a little off the top and blend in the sides. Nope, he just takes a scissors to my hair and just goes for it. I now look like a toilet brush just in time for a Unilocal event this week. Also, one of the roughest barbers I’ve been to. I assume someone’s going to think I’m a prissy pants for not manning up, but this guy wouldn’t listen and just plain rough. Don’t go here if you respect how you look. What an awful place. I actually feel somewhat violated, since my attempts to refuse a short haircut went so ridiculously ignored. Ugh.
