I really enjoy the peaceful, relaxing atmosphere there and the service is sooo friendly! We sat there for a drink and sandwich with my friend (heavenly korozottes sandwich in a lovely big white bun), witnessed that everyone else too was getting the same treatment. Shame that some of their flavoured bread, such as the onion rye bread runs out relatively quick. We took a loaf of plain white village bread 400g for 69p but wish if we had chosen the bigger size, we both LOVE bread and its so tasty, it wont last more than a day for us: D
Brilliant selection of sweet and savoury pastries and cakes, very reasonably priced, not to mention the buy 1 get 1 free offers, so each of us also had a slice of cake (generous portion) and paid for it only 1.29GBP. You can also buy for take away. I love the fact that they now have so many hungarian products that we miss so much, such as melegszendvicskrem, solet, szaraz tesztak, daralt keksz.
On top of all this, they opened from morning till 9pm even on weekends!

This is an absolutely wonderful place if you are looking for fabulous cakes and pastries, or if like me, you are pining for a real authentic Hungarian dessert. Considering the generous size and outstanding quality of the cakes, this place is unbelievably cheap, makes excellent coffee and hot chocolate, and easily lives up to its reputation for selling truly Hungarian specialities. When I walked in I could hardly believe my eyes: kakaos csiga, kremes, retes, pite, zserbo, turos taska, pogacsa and much more. On top of this, there were also some Hungarian goods there such as Balaton szelet and Duna kavics. The staff were really friendly and it didn’t take long to realise they were Hungarian, so after about two minutes we were already chatting about our life stories and how we ended up in London, just like you would back home. This place is an absolute must if you are from Hungary and are missing the unforgettable café culture of Budapest. However, if you are unfamiliar with this cuisine I can only recommend you visit this bakery even more, as it is a worthy representation of the cake and pastry culture of Hungary. If you don’t want to miss out on something special, I strongly advise you to go and have Sunday afternoon tea there in the near future. Jo etvagyat!

The bread, cakes and pastries of Hungary don’t get enough press. The French have rather cornered the market, and we all tend to forget about the equally established coffee and cake culture of Austria and Hungary. However, after you’ve had a strudel slice of poppy-​seed and morello cherry Meggyes-​Mákos Rétes, or a slice of seven-​layered, hard caramel-​topped Dobos Torta, you’ll probably start remembering it.
Danube, Harringay’s Hungarian bakery opened a few years ago now. A brave move, given the number of Greek and Turkish bakeries already on that stretch of Grand Parade, including a formidable rival in the form of Yasar Halim’s excellent Turkish bakery. However, it looks like Danube has carved out a niche for itself supplying local shops with bread, so I hope that it survives. There always seem to be Hungarians popping in for bread when I go, so fingers crossed.
In the actual shopfront, they sell a wide selection of Hungarian breads made from various mixes of grains, potato bread (burgonyás kenyér), rolls and baguettes. They also have a good selection of Hungarian cakes and pastries, and sweetened and enriched breads, including chocolate/​vanilla plaits.
Fellow Hungarophiles will be delighted that the labels are bilingual, so if you want to try out ordering egy szelet Esterházy tortát, legyen szíves!, you can get the staff to laugh at your awful accent with ease. At least, that’s what always happens to me.
Oh, they also sell pretty decent coffee.
