Excellent Japanese café along the Regents Canal. The entrance is a bit obscure, so you do have to pay attention to find it. There are a couple gates that lead toward the basin and on to the café. Really cute ambience inside. Small play area to the side with some toys for the kids. Quiet and cosy place to catch up with some friends or to get some work done. Also features a few tables outside for those warmer months. The menu features the typical coffee drink, but my go-to is the matcha latte. There is a limited food menu that features udon and breakfast toasts with Japanese toppings. The food is not exactly memorable, but it’s tasty enough. Summary: come for the ambience and enjoy the serenity of the Kingsland basin. Love the mom and pop feel of the café.

Nothing is better than japanese ‘home style’ food that actually feels ‘home style’, they don’t always get everything right, but the staff is really down to earth. I enjoy coming here.

This is one of those places that only makes 10 dishes between sweet and savory, and each one of them is spot on. I love love love their soba noodles! I always get extra seaweed, mackerel and eggs, and life smiles up at me. Their little rice triangles are great too! Try if in the area, it’s tiny but homely and adorable!

Very cute spot hidden off the path of the canal. They have a good selection of homemade Japanese type cakes with matcha and sesame flavorings. We ordered the matcha and black sesame latte and I don’t know why, but we got jipped from getting the cute ceramic cups and just got a regular glass tumblers. Not sure if it’s smaller too… don’t want to get skimped esp how the drinks aren’t on the cheap side. Taste is good. The wifi didn’t work for me.

Toconoco is a small Japanese style café in the Kingsland Basin of the Regents Canal right next to Haggerston Station. It’s located right at the end of the basin so it’s really quiet around the area — in fact, it can be quite hard to find if you don’t know exactly how to get here. Outside, the café has a number of quiet outdoor seats — I’m sure they’ll be full on a hot summer day! They’ve got plenty of bike parking spots as well. Inside is a hipster-ish Japan inspired café with lots of specialty drinks such as black sesame lattes and matcha green tea. They also have some great home made cakes and udon dishes as well. See photos for a selection of cakes and drinks as well as photos. They’ve also got a kids play area in another room if you’ve got kids and want to keep them occupied whilst you get some work done. They have wifi(it was a bit touchy whilst I was there for some reason) but when I got it to work it was plenty fast. Finally, they have a very very small Japanese shop inside that sells groceries like soy sauce, seaweed, sauces, etc. great in case you can’t get down to Chinatown for certain ingredients. Overall, it’s a great place to catch up on work during the day — I’ll definitely be back here.
