I’m now back in the US, but I shopped here for my Dadwhile visiting London. My Dad regularly wears suits to work and likes to wear bow ties with his suits. While visiting London, I wanted to get him a really, really nice bow tie as a souvenir. You would think this is not hard to do, but it was much harder than I thought it would be. Finally towards the end of my trip I walked into a store off Sloane Square which obviously sold men’s clothes. I was directed upstairs and after describing what I wanted, the manager said I should go to Turnbull & Asser on Jermyn Street, where he used to work, and they would have what I wanted. I received great service. As I walked into the store, I realized I was terribly underdressed(tshirt, sweater, yoga pants — I was a tourist, but seriously underdressed). I was greeted by a sales clerk who didn’t react at all about my clothes, which relaxed me, and she directed me to the bow ties. She explained the pricing and the materials and left me alone to sort through them all to find the exact right pattern/material(great, I don’t like hovering). I was left alone for about 15 minutes while I looked at every tie(about 30 or 40) My Dad is thrilled with the tie and has since worn it many times. He usually gets complimented on it. It’s the most I’ve ever paid for this particular type of item, but I think it is the best you could find. The bow tie(on sale) was I think 45 pounds, about $ 60-$ 70 when I purchased it, but he loves it and its mostly the only one he wears now.

As I’ve said before, Turnbull & Asser are the best ever shirts in whole of London. And probably the world.

Turnbull & Asser on Jermyn Street are no doubt a shirting and hosiery institution. They supplied siren suits to Winston Churchill and formal shirts to most James Bonds. Their shirts are of excellent quality and T & A are one of the last Jermyn Street companies that get their shirts made in Britain. This is obviously reflected in the prices, and their ready-to-wear shirts are around 100GBP. They also do a made-to-measure and bespoke shirt service which I have never tried personally. My shirts from T & A are nearly perfect even after years of wearing and many visits to the laundry. The only downside is the fit. In contrast to many other Jermyn Street shirtmakers, they do not produce a slimmer-fit range, and their normal fit is quite wide and baggy. I therefore bring my ready-to-wear shirts to my alteration tailor to have them taken in. Most shirts come in either a double cuff or their signature three-button cuff. The cocktail cuff as displayed in many James Bond movies is to my knowledge only available on custom-made shirts. The sales staff is often not helpful at all, and many times I entered the shop with no other customer around and 5 sales people standing idle and staring at me rather than asking if I needed assistance. T & A have a wide range of shirts in fancy stripes that may please the British eye, but may be a bit tacky to wear with a suit and tie in most other countries. They also have a nice range of high-quality ties that I can also recommend.

Some decent shirts, but inferior in quality to other local male clothes shops. Service was awful, looked around for more than ten minutes and wasn’t acknowledged once nor asked if i needed any assistance.
