I had very high hopes for this place but they bottomed out very shortly after I arrived. We booked a table for my wife and myself to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Being that we have kids now and don’t go out as much as we did, we were both looking forward to the night with out the kids. We arrived early and waited are the bar to get served. I noticed that as I was walking to the bar I became invisible to the bar staff and for this reason I never got served. Undeterred we went to our table and ordered a drink. we order them 3 times in total before the drinks came out. We ordered food, We both ordered deep fried brie. The brie looked good so I started. Oh dear, the brie was very cold in the centre and not the melted heaven I was expecting. The starter went away and the mains came out. My order came with bubble and squeak which was very rubbish and it was swimming in oil. My wife ordered stake which was dry and not worth £16.00. I told the waitress of my disappointment and she said. «it probably because you haven’t been out for such a long time and you don’t know what to expect». We did not stop for a sweet and left with out paying for the stake. The place calls it self a gastro pub. I’ve eaten in better burger vans. At least the staff in burgers vans are polite.

THERIGHTSIDEOFTHEGREEN Situated on the A330 plumb spang opposite (which is renowned for its lovely beer, beautiful view but stingy sandwiches), The George is a gastropub boasting a pleasing local atmosphere at one end, a decent pint Photo link: and more than enough tables at the other. We cruised in at lunchtime during the week. This is when your average pub can indeed be empty which suggests that you pass on the food and wander off elsewhere but that was most certainly not the case here. An interesting menu offered such dishes as gilthead bream: the sort of dish that you only encounter at the better end of the gastropub field. The wines also include some amusing varieties, the like of which are also not everyday tipples. Photo link: Service is very friendly and fast and a pleasant outside garden Photo link: provides a pleasant alternative at the right time of the year. It is immediately outside the restaurant but also stretches round onto the green and behind the pub. A light lunch was cost-effective, well cooked and certainly did not leave us starving. I believe that this is the place to go in Holyport.

Very attractive looking on the green at Holyport. Lots of flowers and grass and funny locals, so nice to sit out on a sunny day. They had a decent selection of beer but the service and food were not so good.
