Adults only: Lego Ideas and Architecture Ah, the Eighties: they’re back, almost as if they never went away. First Back To The Future, then Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, now Ghostbusters, the Lego Ideas sets are riding a wave of nostalgia for the childhoods of the men-children of today(and I count myself as one of their number). There’s even a Lego Creator firehouse, if you’re that way inclined. The best thing about Lego is that the basic sets — the sets with just bricks, no cross-marketing or themes — promote creativity and incentive play, particularly for kids. There’s now a new Lego Architecture kit that’s all white for adults to build their own minimal cities. This store, like others, has play areas to try out new kits; pick and mix; build your own minifig; and drop-in sessions for all ages to try their hand at building particular themes. Be prepared to lose hours in here, and perhaps even pounds…

I spent far too long in the Lego store today creating mini figures of my family from the shop’s big pots of Lego heads, bodies, legs and mini accessories. You can make 3 figures for a fiver, which makes a very unique and fun gift! I was making mini versions of my family to give to my dad for his birthday. So he can always have us near! I loved every minute of my visit to the Lego store(and it was probably heading towards the 70 minute mark too!) Even though towards the end I was getting a bit frustrated that they had a limited choice for female outfits and loads of stuff for the men. Shocking sexism Lego, sort it out! ;) It was great to see all the young kids running about the shop getting really excited about all the amazing Lego kits; it’s so brightly coloured and the staff are VERY enthusiastic and helpful even if you’re a big kid. So if you’re like me and you grew up annoying your parents by littering the front room with Lego then you’ve definitely got to visit the Lego store.

I absolutely love going to the lego store — even though it’s usually just to window shop and gawp at the awesomeness on offer! Seriously, if I won the euromillions I’d be in there buying every set from the Star Wars, DC, Marvel, TMNT etc collections(I know how to have a good time as you can see…) There always looks to be a good amount of families in there meaning it’s a place that doesn’t look too dangerous to take the kids(i.e you don’t necessarily end up leaving with a £200 bill) and they have all sorts of seating areas with bricks to make your own creations(unfortunately at 31 I don’t think I’d get away with having a go myself) Be prepared though parents — sets are super expensive and even a basic set with a couple of figures will set you back £25! I can honestly say though that it’ll be worth it for the look on your kids face if mine is anything to go by!

Ah, the Lego Store. My face lit up the day I was strolling through the Arndale and spotted the sign declaring this it was going to open up in 2012. Imagine it, Manchester’s very own Lego store! Full of bits and pieces to play with, a children’s paradise. And that includes big kids too. The range here is pretty good considering the fairly small size of the store; Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Marvel, Lego city, the proper girly pink things, dedicated Christmas cabins, and a whole range that I don’t even know about because suddenly I’m old. There’s a small area where you can build your own lego model, and I believe you can create 3 and buy a little stand if you so wish. The staff are always friendly and entertaining children, having races with Lego cars or showing them how to use the child-height computer facilities. The only thing the staff don’t know about? Scenes from films! How sad is it that this has become a super bug bear of mine when walking through? It’s my age(again.) But yeah, they had a scene of Helms Deep where Aragorn and and King Theoden were battling each other. C’mon people. Think of the children. Anyway, 3 stars purely for the size of the shop as it can feel awfully crowded and, naturally, you can buy it all online cheaper.

If you love Lego, you have to visit here. You could probably get the stuff cheaper elsewhere — such as online. I popped in recently to get a little gift for friends. Actually, I just popped in because I had not gone the Lego Store opened in Arndale Centre and being a child of the 80s/90s(and being a geek), I of course love(d) Lego. As well as the various«kits», you can build your own mini Lego figurine. It would have been nice if they had more options — kind of limited with the different hates, heads, legs etc especially for woman.
