A low-​key backstreet boozer. Snooker. Barman who seems like he could have been the barman here for at least 30 years. Nice range of sessionable ales on cask. Good value. Eclectic bric a brac on display — football trophies, beer ephemera, photos, event posters. This would be such a wonderful local. If you are making your way out to Fat Cat, pop in here for at least a quick half.

This pub was recommended by a neighbour who is a regular.
I can see why — it’s within walking distance and offers real ales.
Plus cranberry juice from a carton (cheaper than bottled) for me.
Personally I found the flowers in a bottle on the tables over fussy for a pub and it’s a shame that there isn’t a non-​smoking table outside (but that is a problem everywhere these days).
It was good in that there was no TV blaring out (and I didn’t notice any music).
There were clearly many regulars including solitary ‘old boys’ but the chairs/​tables weren’t over comfortable

The Alex is a great local, stocking 3 – 4 well kept real ales, with a cosy atmosphere which makes it a nice calm place to grab a pint. They also serve some nice food at around 4 – 6 quid a plate, with some interesting dishes in there. It’s refreshing to see a pub doing food and not completely altering the layout and feel of the place; the Alex is still a pub, it just happens to do food too.
It has a dart board and pool table, as well as a cool little jukebox and a plethora of different board games. It’s telling that the local university games club comes and plays their games at the Alex; the tables are a good size and the landlord clearly goes out of his way to accomodate everyone. It’s a well loved place, deservedly so, well worth a visit.
