A modern family pub so really not my kind of place. They just had St Austell IPA on. As that is one of their beers I generally don’t like too much I instead went for a reliably crisp rattler. Good name for a local pub, named after a chemist/​inventor who was born in Penzance over 200 years ago.

If you have ever heard of Desperado Beer (lager with a dash of Tequila) then this is the only place in Penzance that you can get it. I highly recommend it, so go try some! The pub occasionally has live music, and Karaōke, screens that show football, and a beer garden out the back which in summer can be quite a sun trap (before the shadows rob you of it).

I had my first pint of St Austell ale here and I have to say, it was good times. The pub is full of locals this time of year, with pockets of twenty– and thirtysomethings sitting around watching sports on TV. There is also a small beer garden out back where the smokers conglomerate to mingle with the smell of the Chinese restaurant next door (handy considering they don’t serve food at night).
Fair warning: Wednesday is karaōke night.
