First time I tried Shieldaig whisky. can’t say I liked it. But I can say I liked this old pub bursting with music, laughter, shouting, and traces of some more music hidden in the background. Everyone is happy and friendly. not the fake friendly. But the genuine, «cool you guys don’t seem from here but I don’t give a f*** so love it and enjoy!» –kind. We took a seat in a wee corner housed by a wall of old books. The place is nowhere near hip, neither is it old school charm. Its just old and loud. But its fun and authentic. I’d come here over a Wetherspoons any day when in town again.

As the name suggests this place is a great little pub, just perfect for coming along to and relaxing right into. As an infrequent patron, I have never felt out of place in this pub even thought the regulars are there often enough that they can collectively spot an outsider from across the other side of the bar within a few minutes. This venue has a great selection of open mike nights and live music of all genres and styles and above all the prices are reasonable and consistent, which means you can time and again spend time here and enjoy the comfortable seating and the entertainment.(Sometimes the other patrons are just as entertaining as the musical acts.) I regular felt the need once to come up to me and congratulate me on my facial hair, asking to shake me buy the hand and revel in my moustache growing capabilities. The quirky patrons, along with the somewhat centric bar staff give this pub a great feel and it’s a rare occasion leaving this pub without a story or two to tell. I would defiantly recommend a quiet pint in here, or joining in on one of the rowdier open mike events.

The settle inn is like a pub straight out of Cheers. Ooozing with character and characters, featuring some truly talented local musicians, and a lively open mic night with everything from performance poetry to Americana, one of the most well-attended traditional music sessions in the country, plus a weekly pub quiz. This is where the top of the town community come together to celebrate our own. It’s not fancy but it has great ales and great staff, and it feels like a real pub, not another belhaven-affiliated plasaticised uniformed cog in a corporate machine. This is a family owned pub with a heart. Not really a student pub as you would think of it, but students do frequent it — esp those interested in local music. There’s room for everyone in this small, cosy watering hole that gets sweaty as hell on a busy weekend. It doesn’t do food, it does good drink, a roaring fire, good people and good times. It has a loyal clientele who love it and each other. Sing it with me: WHEREEVERYBODYKNOWSYERNA-A-AME!

Hahahahaha. I’m really not sure how to review this pub but I will give it a shot. We visited here on a Friday afternoon while in Stirling as my Aussie friend requested an «old man pub with a fire». Stirling’s resident Unilocal expert, Nicola C recommended here with the disclaimer of «I don’t know what it’s like during the day though.» So, my friend and I pitched up to be greeted by two regulars at the door who told us the pub was closed. «Awwww, really?» I said. «Naw hen!» followed by much guffawing on their behalf. In we stumbled, both having a laugh at the two oldies. The bar was empty apart from one other old gent which seems reasonable for 4.30pm on a Friday. We got a couple of drinks(Thistly Cross bottles for £3.50 each which is what I pay for them in the supermarket!) and sat by the fire(which thankfully someone came and stoked the hell out of so it was absolutely roaring, and scorching hot). The bar had a nice relaxed vibe. By the time we were leaving one of the regulars was well steaming and came over to talk to the Australian lassies and generally give us a bit of a ribbing. He got us to sign the visitors book and was generally pretty funny — I even got a kiss as I was leaving. Lucky me. So, would I recommend going here? Yes, I definitely would, even just for the laughs you’ll have. The fire was warm, the seats were comfy and they had a nice selection of crisps/chips for snacking on. Thanks for the recommendation Nicola!

I met a couple of friends here with great hesitation because I had it mixed up with another pub that I understood to be, um, not the kind of place a nice girl wants to go. I’m very pleased to say that it was actually a very nice, quiet place — especially for a Friday evening. Met my friends about 5.30 Friday for a couple of pints before dinner. The offerings on tap were decent. I had a pint of Jack, after being offered tasters from a couple others.(I always give bonus points for tasters!) It’s noted as the oldest pub in Stirling and is rather quaint looking. A couple of the(seemingly) regulars were very nice and chatty(without being irritating). Definitely a place I’ll take my Mum when she visits next.(Though she won’t like walking up the hill to get there!)

The Settle Inn is like my second home. From the moment my band played the open mic night there, I was sure it was somewhere I’d be happy to come to again and again. We now have a regular slot there and the crowd are always great and up for a bit of banter and the staff are so lovely and really appreciate their regulars. The special part about the Settle Inn is that it’s not just another student pub — it is filled with a wide variety of age groups and has it’s fair share of loyal punters, who all seem to be very entertaining characters. They cater to all with reggae nights, quiz nights and live music. You never know what might happen with a night at the Settle Inn. But I can guarantee it’s always a good time, which is why I’m spending my third year of university in a house just two minutes away. — I love the place.

We were in a group of ten and after our ‘City Walls’ experience, we simply wanted a Scottish boozer. Yep, its a locals pub and though I think we were seen as an invasion, being so many, the locals quickly welcomed us and served diligently. Great jukebox, we sat at the back, which is akin to a cellar, before moving to the front near the fire(and the bar) and stayed there for the whole evening. Great beer and superb range of malts, if you want a real drink — come here!
