I have this friend at work who never shuts up about this place! She says they treat her like royalty and the food is amazing. I found myself to be in Sutton Coldfield so thought I would head down with a couple of mates. Inside it is very homely with lots of plants and made me feel very comfortable straight away. On poppadum dip watch, we had an amazing Imli(Tamarind) dip which I adore and reminds me so much of my mum’s homemade version. For my main dish I had a loaded Subzi Special. What was most intriguing to me was the inclusion of Courgette, something I haven’t seen in an Indian dish before, which worked very well with the under used Okra, Cauliflower and spring onion. Being Sutton Coldfield, I was expecting the cost to be extortionate, but was pleasantly surprised with the modest cost. There is space for about 10 cars on site. Our experience at Kababish was very decent with great food but nothing mind-blowing. But there is nothing wrong with that…

Was here last Thursday night, group of 6 workmates. One of the guys lives just down the road and wanted to try this place. there must be at least 6 Indian restaurants within 5 mins walk so I was hoping for good things. Its very nice inside, modern but retaining a traditional feel. It was very busy but we had booked so the table was waiting for us. I prefer to order a drink at the bar and look at the menu but as I wasn’t the host we all went straight to the table. Started with papads and dips and here is where they lost what would have been a 5 star review, papads were soft and as there must have been 50 people eating they cant have been old or sitting out too long. I thought then that I wasnt going to enjoy the rest of the meal, how wrong I was ! The starters had a lot of dishes that I haven’t seen before, I went with a kind of filo parcel with feta and mustard seeds and it was very very good. Mains were also top quality, I had a chicken curry with lamb keema and asked them to spice it to madras level, it was delicious. The group left ordering sides and bread to me so it was couple of naan, aloo paratha for me, dhal, channa masalla and sag aloo to share. Service was good, catching an eye to get another round of drinks was easy even though they were about at 75% capacity. And one unusual thing for me is that somebody else was paying ! When we are next back in this area I guess we will be back here.

I went to this restaurant with an open mind, as I — like other reviewers here — had heard good things about this restaurant. Sadly however I was not impressed; something very much lacked a ‘zing’. In our group we ordered a sharing platter for three, which had the same amount as the sharing platter for two. The waiters were pleasant, the food good but slightly on the expensive side, and the portions were small. The trouble was though that the restaurant didn’t inspire me — something about it lacked character and warmth. Just basically ‘meh’. So yes, I’ve experienced a lot better, and I recommend the Streetly Balti.

Kababish has a good name locally, which may or may not have been buoyed by an urban myth(admittedly, possibly true), that an NEC-performing Robbie Williams is a fan, even taking aptly-named Ginger Spice as a dining companion. The recommendation of a sweaty singer from Stoke is alone enough to put me off in principle, but I cannot take the word of the grapevine, I have to let Kababish entertain me. Perhaps it simply couldn’t live up to the hype(which genuinely persists beyond the Williams rumour), but I wasn’t particularly impressed. Admittedly, choosing between the several similar restaurants nearby may come down to matters of subjective taste, and this one simply did not tickle my fancy. And yet, while its menu strays far from the beaten track, the seemingly small portions and seating just that bit too close to other diners undermined the effect, at least for me personally. Vaguely casually-done service as the radio played near the counter didn’t help. But, as suggested, with something people seem to defend as fiercely as their curries, it may simply be that I don’t get it. Given its busy Boldmere location, perhaps the biggest draw may be that it provides off-street parking.

Since 1983 The Kababish has been providing high class Indian cuisine from a talented team of chefs. Sid is the owner and he greets you with a huge smile and an even bigger personality. He’s a gossip and there’s nothing he doesn’t know about the local area as he’s a popular business resident. His claim to fame is that Robbie Williams came to his restaurant, he proudly shows everyone the picture of Robbie and him which hangs proudly in the restaurant. Sid ensures the atmosphere is great, the service is efficient and the food is exceptional. There’s an extensive menu, my favourite is the Kababish Kebab to start. Lamb combined with fresh herbs, spices, spring onions and green chillies, made into round shaped kababs. Then after a few more beers time for the main course, I opt for Chicken Keema Masalla. Tandoori marinated breast pieces gently cooked in tandoor, then cooked with mince lamb, fresh herbs in a creamy masalla sauce. Delicious.
