This is my local and have been informed it was built around 1538. It is one of the oldest buildings in the area, it and it used to be a monastery, a coaching inn and now the Red Lion. This place does have a very relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff and an open log fire for the cold winter evening. There is a wide choice of food and all sound very appetising, the food it freshly cooked and source their foods from local suppliers. There is a wide range of wines and beer and they also serve Sunday roads for about £9 each. They have a children’s menu too so good for families. Outside is a patio garden as well as a large garden with an adventure play area for kids. They also cater for private parties. The restaurant part of the pub(separate) is called the ‘Coco De Mar’ and look very stylish and shows quality dining. There are many weekly events on such as Thai nights, Sunday Roasts and many others, they put a board up outside the pub showing what they have on.

Not a bad pub, and one of three in the small High Street of Stanstead Abbotts. It’s current owner can be credited with trying new things with food for such a ‘normal’ pub. Stuffed local marrow is one such dish and comes recommended by a drinking partner. Fear not though, jacket spuds and burgers are also on the menu for those who like something more usual! The drinks on offer are standard stuff but reasonably priced. The Red Lion also has a dedicated restaurant area but it’s been a few years since I tried it so can’t comment on what it’s like now. What separates this pub out from the other two in the village is the garden. It has a large courtyard area directly outside the back of the pub, which in turn leads out to a very big garden, complete with a playground area at the rear. During summer months there are a fair few outdoor events, such as BBQs and Hog-Roasts with penalty shootout competitions etc. It just makes it a bit different to go there, but if you don’t like football then it’s probably best to stay away on matchdays as the live Sky games are on and it gets pretty packed out. It also has a fairly good sized car park although most drinkers are resident in the village and stagger home!
