Close to bus station, and only a 15 – 20 min walk(stagger?) to the DW Stadium, this Real Ale mecca is an ideal place to spend some time before, after, or instead of, going to the match.

One of wigans best pubs it right next to the bus station very handy for a last pint before you go for your bus home lol they do take out tubs aswell it holds 2 pints in them(very handy) :-). The staff are very nice and polite and friendly and the beer pretty cheap it can get very busy especially when the football or rugby on so you do struggle to get a seat it 90% a man’s pub you don’t see many women in there apart from the bar staff. The pub itself on the small side but they do have a outdoor seating area with heaters there is a hotel attached to the anvil pub but unfortunately the hotel closed down year ago.

Walking between Wigan Central and the Brocket, we popped in to the Anvil for a drink — those 15 minutes are thirsty work! It’s what I would call a traditional pub, with 90% male patrons and plenty of screens with the football playing. Known as a betting pub with a bookies across the road, it gets beyond busy on Wigan football and rugby home games, so perhaps one to avoid — especially if you’re looking for a quiet drink. 3 and a half pints came to £8.50 so not to be sniffed at! Little outside area at the back if you’re a smoker or simply want some fresh air.

One of wigans hidden gems. Definitely one of wigans finest boozers. Right next to the bus station and just round corner from wigan wallgate train station. Kind of older crowd pub so very friendly and never any trouble. Great outdoor patio at rear with heaters. Lounge area, bar area and small seating area near toilets always playing sport on the tvs. Staff are great and friendly, service is quick a must to visit if in wigan trust me.

My favourite pub I have ever been to. The bar staff are chatty and friendly, the beer selection has something for everyone(they specialise in Real Ale, and Belgian beers), and the punters are always happy to have a bit of a chat whilst you wait for your drinks at the bar, or share a table if no others are free. The pub gets a little busy on both Football and Rugby match days, but again, home and away fans mix with no trouble. The pub itself is run by the owners of the local Allgates Brewery around the corner, so expect to have their new ales available here. You have the choice of the basic lagers(Fosters, Stella, Carling), Real Ale(Regulars are Hydes Black, one of the Allgates Milds, plus a selection of random others), Belgian beers(Frulli, and the recently added Brugse Zot), Staropramen from the good ol’ Czech Republic, and the German beauty that is Schneiderweiss. There are also bottled beers, or «alcopops», along with the usual suspects with the spirits. If you’re in town and fancy a drink in a friendly atmosphere, get down to The Anvil!

The best boozer in Wigan by far. I always visit this pub during the Wigan beerfest(currently on in March at Robin Park Sports Centre — the Anvil puts on a free bus from the pub to the venue), and the real ale /foreign beer selections are always impressive and well kept. A must for real ale fans and those who respect decent, well-run pubs.

A truely exceptional boozer. I will be remembering this one if I am going back to Wigan again. A CAMRA award winning pub, The Anvil appealed to me and being an away fan alone after the game at the JJB Stadium I stepped in with trepidation. It was full with Wigan fans watching the late Saturday kick off English Premier League game. I got a warm welcome at the bar and the most amazing beer selection I have seen on draft in 2009. There was Hydes Bitter, four guest real ales, Hydes Black(a sort of Gunniness type stout) all available for under £2 a pint. There was also Stella, Guinness amongst the usual suspects and then Fruli, Klug pilsner, St. Louis Kriek, Leffe, Staropramen and another speciality beer for reasonable prices. I could not recommend this place higher even though I was just a passing visitor.

The jewel in Wigan’s pub crown, The Anvil is without doubt the best pub in Wigan town centre. The pub offers a range of cask ales and continental lagers; it is a regular winner of the Wigan Camra pub of the season /pub of the year awards. The atmosphere is friendly and the staff are cheerful. The pub is very popular with football fans on match days with home and away fans mixing well and sharing their love of good beer. The Anvil is a 2 minute walk from the both train stations and is next to the bus station.
