We ate here at and stayed in the hotel for the evening, because it was pouring down rain outside. The atmosphere was very nice, however we did not have a good experience in terms of the service and the food. First of all, the beer was great, but that excellence is credited to Stiegl and had nothing to do with PitterKeller, except their pouring it into a glass. The restaurant lost our dinner order. None of us were feeling rushed for dinner and we were enjoying our beers. The waiter was asked to check on our order, when we saw two other parties with the same number of people get their dinner and were well into it. It seemed clear that our order was lost. We asked one final time for the waiter to check our order. After another 10 minutes, we finally received our food, much of it lukewarm. No apology from the waiter, but more of an attitude from him. If you make a mistake, you own it and apologize. Especially in customer service like this. There are plenty of great places to get excellent Austrian food, and many other cuisines within walking distance from this hotel. We may have hit the PitterKeller when they were having a bad night, but the service and cold food were what they were. Skip this place, get out of the hotel, and get some good local food.

Leider kein«WOW» beim Essen. Einmal reicht.

I would say this was probably my favorite meal in Austria. The restaurant is in Salzburg, not too far from where they filmed Sound of Music. The restaurant itself has a very beer hall feel to it, very rustic and very comforting winter dishes. All the dishes aren’t all that healthy but they were delicious. The food: Classic Cream Goulash with sour cream and herb spaetzle. I loved this dish. It was so hearty and great for a cold winter day. The Goulash was nice and creamy and the beef chunks were fork tender. The spaetzle itself doesn’t have a lot of taste but they pickup the sauce quite nicely. Wiener Schnitzel with parsley potatoes and cranberries. It’s a perfectly cooked veal cutlet with nice creamy potatoes and a nice tart acidic note from the cranberries. This dish seems pretty simple but the flavors were great. It’s a super homey dish.

The food was good, and so was the beer. But there were 2 things that I didn’t like, hence the twin stars: the waiter, and the claim that this is the oldest beer cellar in Salzburg. Let’s start with the latter. I was on a rushed 1-day trip to Salzburg, and decided to go to a place offering local food. Pitterkeller was listed in the little map they gave me at the train station, proudly stating that«this is the oldest beer cellar in Salzburg». If that is true, then Salzburg must have some of the newest cellars in Europe. This one is located under a fairly modern hotel that was built at most during the 70s. I know, I know… maybe the original cellar was in a building that was destroyed during the war, but still… you read old, so you expect old. Let’s move on to the waiter. This was probably the rudest waiter I’ve that the displeasure of being served by. And I’m not saying rude in the disrespectful way, but in the sarcastic, smug, and obnoxious way. We were a party of 4: my wife and I, and 2 kids. After we got settled, I asked the waiter if he spoke English, and he responded verbatim: «Sometimes I do, but I don’t read minds, so you’ll have to tell me what you want to drink». I felt like walking out right then and there, but the kids were hungry and tired, so I decided to put up with this guy. I ordered a wiener schnitzel, which came with boiled potatoes, so I asked the waiter if I could get them substituted with spaetzle. He gave me a look of disgust, followed by an insolent smirk, and said: «If you want. I’m not the one who will have to eat that». The implication was that wiener schnitzel and spaetzle don’t go together, which deeply offended my Hungarian genes. But again, we were hungry and tired, so I ignored his insult. Net net, we ate and we got out of there, but that guy’s smirk still populates my nightmares.

Very good food. Can’t tell how authentic but saw multiple local family gatherings there so seems less touristy than most places. Nice outdoor seating. Waiters and waitresses wear traditional Bavarian style clothing. Large portions. BBQ ribs were nothing short of amazing. Even green salad was good, came with tasty potatoes and shredded cabbage buried underneath the lettuce. Unpretentious good food at a reasonable price.
