It’s now sushi well, all new management. Food has decreased in size and taste, and the sweet ladies working there are gone :(now it’s just your average run of the mill sushi place with lukewarm service. Their special rolls, galbi and katsu don used to be absolutely amazing. Too bad.

Great prices, well above average quality, very friendly service. Had the Okinomi Special Roll with snapper. Very large serving, very fresh ingredients. Nothing bad to say about this place — will be back.

My friend and I just enjoyed a lovely dinner at the Okonomi Sushi restaurant on 6th Street in New Westminster. I had menu item #78, which was a large Bento box with Chicken Teriyaki and my friend Paul enjoyed menu item #74, Chicken Teriyaki served on a bed of bean sprouts and rice noodles. Quality of food is very good — hot, for what is supposed to be served hot and cold for that which is meant to be cold. Decent service, not a lot of interaction or chatter with our server, but she certainly was pleasant, place was very clean and relatively busy, at least when we were there. Claim to fame: is either their Pink or Black Rice — supposedly unique to their restaurant in New Westr. — tasty — with high ratings for it’s nutrition. Would I go again — yes — not hurriedly so, but I would definitely eat there again.

So gooooooooooood, btw I don’t eat Asian food, but I don’t mind having a crispy California roll every time I get a chance. Don’t hesitate to visit this place, you won’t be disappointed.

This place feels confusing to me. I walked in and was really confused by the décor — it’s dark, dingy, has reclining chairs instead of regular restaurant seating and smells super weird. When I got the actual sushi I was underwhelmed, especially for their pricing. I found their combinations really strange too, in what world does a dynamite roll just have prawn and tamago? Would not order from again.

Although, the service and serving is quite slow, but I have to say the foods are very delicious.

I come here for my favourite roll vancouver roll . Food: the food has always tasted good. They have a huge menu with lots of food options Service: fast and efficient Décor: the booth kind of areas are kind of awkward to sit in with the sofa and it does have a little run down look. But the food and service will keep me coming back

Good food, horrible service. It took 40 minutes to order, and 30 minutes to get our food — but maybe that’s because they took an order from a table who arrived 20 minutes after us, before us. I understand when a restaurant is busy but it wasn’t. Three servers when only ten tables in the restaurant are occupied? I assume our server was in the same section as the table served before us since she brought our drinks and food, and she walked past us over ten times before taking our order. Again, understandable when the restaurant is busy or full but it wasn’t — the staff is extremely slow and lazy. I work in a restaurant myself and would be fired for this sort of service. To top it off, we waited 30 minutes to get our bill, and only ended up getting it because my friend went to the front to ask for it. Messy and disorganized, a table that left a few minutes after we got there was still dirty when we left two hours later. The employees need some serious re-training. I won’t be back.

I just tried to place an order for pickup and still have not been successful. I’ve called 4 times, been put on hold immediately, and then they never come back. On one of those calls they hung up on me. It shouldn’t be that hard to order food. I’ve been for dine in too. The sushi is good but not great. The service is generally slow and poor. Also there’s a weird smell in there. But I like the setting and the location is good. If I could give 1.5 stars I would but since that’s not an option and 2 is definitely too high…

Went in for a quick bite, and ordered the rainbow and Stanley park rolls. As an avid sushi eater, I found the rainbow roll a little lacking. Definitely missing the prawn tempura in the middle. The Stanley park roll was something else though. Deep friend snapper was delicious. The roll was kind of sweet then the spicy sauce hits you right after. Really good. Both items were quite large and for 18 $ I’d say it was not bad overall.

I like this location too! Late night sushi = best. I love their pink rice, which is very flavourful. But overall, I’d say my fav. dish is the Spicy Korean Don… a lot of fresh sashimi + tamago + ebi tempura… and I can drizzle my don with the Spicy Korean sauce. SOGOOD. It’s actually better than their Deluxe Don, to be honest, but yeah… Oh, and their special rolls are delicious too. I personally don’t go for the special rolls much, but I’ve tasted some from my coworkers’ plates. Haha. But what I really enjoyed the most was the California Roll with Real Crab. MMM!!! This is probs going to be one of my new places to go for sushi.

My friend and I decided to check this place out because it happens to be between our houses and we both happen to love sushi. To be fair, everything in New West is old, old, old. This building is no exception. The inside of Okonomi is what little remains of a club on 4th and Columbia. The rooms are still separated the way they would have been in 1980 when the mural outside was first painted(anyone who has lived/spent time in New West will know the one I’m talking about, it has been there forever.) The restaurant smells like stale cigarettes, which makes sense because the carpet and furnishings looked original. To their credit, they were able to make the dingy décor look extremely clean, and I really enjoyed the huge fans they had everywhere. The food was mediocre. We were the only people in the restaurant and still the server looked at us as though we had done her a personal wrong by opting to give her employer our money. We ordered simple things: miso, cucumber rolls, avocado rolls, and sunomono. I’m of the opinion that if a sushi restaurant can’t make a rice noodle salad I enjoy I probably won’t like much else there. They did an OK job, but just given the number of people in the restaurant(0 when we got there and 0 after we left) and the number of restaurants I’ve worked in where«cost savings» were established during off-seasons, I wouldn’t be comfortable eating the fish there. We were finished and paid within 35 minutes. They had our food out right away, but again there were no other patrons. Our refill of tea was cold. I suspect they didn’t feel like making a second pot for just us. Bottom line: this place has a convenient location and a product for which there is no shortage of demand in Vancouver. Hopefully we were there on an off-day, because with the retro surroundings it could be a real hit. I don’t know that I would go out of my way to come here again, but if I was in the area and with someone who wanted sushi, we might stop in for a roll(no fish.)

Very friendly staff, but the pink rice is off putting… it maybe safe, it may be healthier, but it tastes a bit funny and looks like its gone bad. It looks like it was cooked beside a raw chicken with botulism. At least to me. I’m sorry, but that’s how it looks. maybe I’m weird. But Dont let that stop you from coming in. The chef says its very special and he has applied for a patent. It you can get past that its prepared well and the ingredients are well done and nice. Its a great little place that tries hard and they are very forward thinking. Worth a try!!!

Came here for a large group dinner. Parking is available on the street. Fourth Street is really steep though, so make sure you’re wearing appropriate footwear so that you don’t wipe out on the sidewalk. The restaurant is divided into a main dining area, sushi bar area, and a medium-sized party room(which is where I sat). They room can fit about 50 people. The interior is a bit on the plain side, and you know you’re inside an older heritage building because of the windows. Service was a bit slow, but we were in a large group, so it was understandable. They were also gracious enough not to tap on that ridiculous 18+% tip like many other places. The unique thing about this restaurant is that they use pink rice for their sushi. It’s almost Pepto-Bismol pink. Initially I thought it was the lighting. Then I thought I was going blind. Fortunately my friend(the host) pointed it out to me. Phew. I couldn’t taste any difference between this rice and the ordinary variety, but it was good to know. Most of the sushi tasted pretty ordinary, with the exception of the lobster roll. They actually stick the tail into the piece at the end. Pretty cool stuff. The food was decent, but honestly I thought it was overpriced. Hence the 3 stars instead of 4. I’m guessing there aren’t too many other sushi options in this part of town though.

When I walked into this place it was a lot bigger than I was expecting, and the décor is… random. Although I liked that they had leather booths that were really comfortable to sit in. My friend that I was with said there was a strange smell in there(a few other Unilocalers mentioned this in their reviews as well) but I didn’t notice it. The music was kind of weird too(80s pop, Nickelback, Christmas music…) So they use pink rice here. I thought it was for novelty purposes but apparently pink rice is more healthy than regular rice? It’s infused with fruit and vegetable juices or something. It was good though! I wasn’t super hungry so I only ordered a California roll, one piece of salmon nigiri and one piece of tuna nigiri and it was great — the fish was fresh and delicious. Service was quick and friendly, although there weren’t many people there. I would definitely come back here again to try out more of the rolls and other dishes.

This sushi place is one of my favorites. They make their own nutritious pink sushi rice and they have daily specials. The spicy salmon salad and the okonomi house special roll are items we order almost every time. One thing I can say about this place is the rolls are so good you don’t need a wasabi and soy sauce dip. Its seems the rolls have gotten smaller in diameter which is disappointing and why they didn’t get 5 stars.

Seems like every roll is filled with the same imitation crab meat(like a california roll, plus other things). We were disappointed with my husband’s favourite BC roll, which turned out to be 95% imi crab, 5% salmon skin. We didn’t get a chance to try the nigiri, they’re probably better than the rolls. The place is spacious but smells funny(due to old building), and parking was extremely hard to find. It’s right next to Columbia skytrain station though, which is good I guess. Service was pretty good. We brought our baby and they were very accommodating.

A solid C+. It”s an average sushi joint. The décor isn’t bad, it’s well lit and clean. The service is friendly but slow. We sampled an array of your standard sushi restaurant fare: Gyoza, Spicy Agedashi Tofu, spicy tuna/salmon/scallop roll, chicken yakiudon and salmon sashimi. None of that was bad, but none of it was good or great. With all the other sushi options out there, there isn’t much reason to come back.
