Yes this is a McDonald’s and there are much better places to eat in Barcelona but this is no USA McDonald’s. In the states I haven’t been to a McDonald’s since 2009. They are all hideous with the worst meat and chicken you can imagine. Charging any amount of money for that stuff is a ripoff. That being said this place is different. Spaniards use McDonald’s as a place to enjoy the AC, relax, and use wifi. It’s not meant to be their main meal or to be the staple of their diet. This place is located on La Rambla in a beautiful old building. The food is much better than the junk offered in the USA. My chicken Big Mac was actually good and even better when washed down with a beer. The Spanish cut fries actually taste like real potatoes. The ordering system is computerized and miles ahead of anything I’ve seen in the USA. All Americans should try this place to realize how fast food should be. You will never want to eat in a U.S. Fast food restaurant again. Then maybe they will make changes if people demand better quality service. One last thing. The bathrooms are cleaned every 30 minutes and there is a timer to show when this happens. The men’s urinals do not use water in order to conserve. This does create a smell towards the end of the 30 minutes but the idea is a good one. I learned a lot of things about our culture from visiting this excellent Spanish McDonald’s.

This is for the McDonald’s in Las Ramblas, Barcelona, Spain. First, I always hated McDonald’s. Sorry. Worst Fast. Food. Ever. Now let me change that, I hate McDonalds in the USA, I Love this McDonald’s in Barcelona, Spain. First, the most important part: The Food. It tastes Good! As in, you can eat the(thicker than usual) patty alone, and it is tasty and flavorful! When was the last time you had a Big Mac and said«Hmm, good, I will have another one»?. Good enough to the point of actually adding it to possible quick places to eat in a foreign country?. Fries have this healthy taste to them(Olive Oil cooked, perhaps?. Try their deluxe fries instead of regulars, too). Their own local burger/sandwich, McIberica, blows any US based McD’s hamburger out of the water. Tostadas(muffin based), are a welcome, healthier, change to the Sausage and Egg McMuffin(but, again, the Spanish variant of this last one is still tastier compared to its US counterpart). Drinks are the usual fare, except that they also offer Beer, local mineral water, and Gaspacho(a cold, normally better during Summer, soup. It’s indeed considered a drink there). Everything else looks almost normal McD’s fare(some items I didn’t know what they were or tried). Next, the experience: Located in an old 1800s building in Barcelona’s iconic Las Ramblas(closer to the port than the city center), the interior just screams modern, efficient technology and food service with European flair. It just screams«better» in everything that a Fast Food place should be. Efficient(okay, utilitarian too) while accommodating. Ordering is automated, but not in a sanitized, mechanical way. You order on a Kiosk, with better options than ordering by cashier, able to review and track your order from a screen. After you and your friends pick up your order, the place offers up to four floors, with open windows looking out to Las Ramblas(and ironically, to a KFC mirrored with almost the same set-up, to your left). Plenty of space to spread out in groups. Open until 02:00am. Last, the Caveats: McNuggets. No. Compared to chicken eaten elsewhere in the city, just… no. Pancakes, meh. Donuts, generic. Warning: It gets busy. And loud(it’s a metropolitan city after all). EU/$ exchange is minor quibble(think 75US cents to the EU «dollar»). And the worst Caveat of them all: It will ruin your US McDonald’s experience when you get back home forever. Ordered a Big Mac near LAX, had to throw it away because it had a faint industrial fluid taste to it, fries were like some kind of semi-edible fiber compound(ugh). But, as for Las Ramblas’ McDonald’s, for a last moment«heck, let’s just stop here quickly» food ordering decision, turned out to be a very good(food/location wise) decision. Yes, pencil it down as a viable emergency food stop in Barcelona.

Yes, it’s a McDonald’s, but it’s a good one! Exhausted after wandering down La Rambla? Well, duck in here, enjoy the AC and yummy french fries! We spent hours walking down the lovely tree lined street and needed a break that didn’t cost us a ton of money. There are few places to stop, sit, and take a break on La Rambla. Most of the cafes are expensive and you pay extra to sit outside on the patio. This McDonald’s has a fancy automated ordering system where you don’t even have to deal with anyone. They are fast and the food comes out better than in the USA. There is a TV monitor above the ordering counter where you can view all the different floors and see where there is seating. That makes things much easier! There is also a glass elevator in case you can’t walk up the stairs or have a stroller. We sat on the 1st floor(that’s the 2nd floor to us Americans) and relaxed. There was at least one more floor above us with seating, so plenty of space! We were really pleased that they had free Wi-Fi and took full advantage of it. We found that all the McDonald’s in Spain had free Wi-Fi. We also liked that there was always someone cleaning off the tables and keeping the bathrooms clean. If you are looking for a convenient place to sit for a bit and check your email, this is the place!

I haven’t seen such slow people before! They guy was totally new i’d say, he didn’t speak english(he didn’t understand when I said McChicken — McPollastre in spanish I think) and I was waiting for the poor Chicked sandwich for 23 minutes! After that, he didn’t even remember what I ordered, so he called someone. All that took about 30 minutes of my life! Thanks god he was cute! :S grr
