Albuquerque theater, what a mixed bag, you are! For years I’ve gone and seen old favorites done at Popejoy and experimental and new ideas at some of the small black boxes. Tricklock manages to always been something new and different but never with the awkward feeling that art for art’s sake trumps the show being watchable. At the T-Lab, I’ve seen developing shows that end with a Q&A with the audience so the writers, directors and all involved can hear first-hand from their audience. Every year, the Revolutions festival brings international performance talent to Albuquerque and spoils those who appreciate just about any tastes. If you’re unsure and want to dip your toe in, I highly recommend catching the Reptilian Lounge when it’s running. A variety show showcasing local talent of all types alongside the amazing Tricklock team that never fails to entertain. By the end of the night, you’ll feel like Alex, Hannah, Target Girl, The Page Sisters, and everyone are all your old friends that just want to share one more 10 second dance party.

Want world-class theater and performance art in the middle of the desert? Look no further than Tricklock. This multi-disciplinary performance troupe brings smart, edgy, daft entertainment to a city awash in contemporary ho-hum, and their influence pushes the artistic boundaries of all political stripes. It’s no wonder they now provide artistic direction to the University of New Mexico, their new home. The organization is especially notable for two festivals/events: the Revolutions International theatre festival, which brings global performances to the Duke City every spring; and the Manoa Project, a community-based program for young adults which develops and produces scripts for the up-and-coming set. In essence, these folks care about the cultural landscape of New Mexico and they’re willing to lay it all on the line. If you’re visiting, ditch the Broadway diet and devour some great experimental theater. Tricklock is your ticket.
