Solid place, nothing special. When you drive by the place you might have a picture of what you expect it to be and it’s pretty much it. If I was still young enough to be stumbling home out of the metro after a night of debauchery, I’d probably call this place home. The food is cheap and exactly what you need to fill your belly. I havn’t tried the breakfast and that’s probably a huge draw for commuters. I am sure it’s just as good as most breakfasts or you can try your luck with the 7 – 11 right next door but again, you’d be trying your luck. I’ve always wondered what the J’s stand for. I’m going to guess Jam and Jelly. Makes sense.

The cold weather makes one lazy, so lazy in fact that they start to scour Unilocal in hopes of finding a breakfast place that delivers. When that inevitably fails you just turn to a breakfast place within short driving distance. Enter J&J Sandwich Shop. It had what I needed when I needed it. Less than 5 miles away? Check! Serving breakfast? Check! Cheap? Check! And away we go. I drove over, nearly missing the place in a rundown strip but still visible next to the 7 – 11. Walked in looked at the menu and decided on toast, eggs, and of course scrappple. No breakfast is ever really complete without a side of scrapple. It was only after I had placed my order that I asked about when the other items were served and the nice owner at the counter told me all items were served all day. I didn’t even want to look at it on the way home but it smelled delicious and distracting sitting in the backseat. Upon opening the carryout container everything was still piping hot and looked like a good ol’ home cooked meal… my toast had even been«jammed» for me hehe. I don’t see any reason not to return to this little hole in the wall when the craving is right, despite most of the items being microwaved. I feel better supporting them than a fast food chain with similar quality. The service was good, the menu prices were more than reasonable, and the scrapple was crispy, just the way I like it.

Popped in on a whim yesterday because this is usually my kind of joint. I really like divey ma-n-pa kind of places. I like vinyl seats and formica counters, cracked ceiling tiles, and an ancient television lending its glow to the ambience. A place that has been around forever because it is dang good! A shame, really… The bulgogi was the first thing I saw on the menu, so that is exactly what I ordered for take away. Not thirty seconds after placing the wrapped and bagged food on the passenger seat in my car, I had to crack the windows because of the smell. It wasn’t a good smell. It wasn’t the sweet oniony goodness that overwhelms the senses that I experience at my usual bulgogi go-to joint. Once I arrived home, I had an interesting exchange with a guy in the elevator regarding the smell… he said, with a cringe, «enjoy!» as he stepped off the elevator, but it read more like, «good luck with that!» or «please, for the love of all things holy, don’t eat that you pretty pudgy princess!!» I ate it anyway. Or, I ate a few bites of it before I decided that even though it tasted okay, anything that smelled that bad simply shouldn’t be consumed under any circumstances. Off to the trash chute for that bag, which is a good thing because today when I got down to my car, it still reeked. Can you imagine if I had let that sit in my garbage bin overnight??? Finally, the very straw that broke it all… tummy troubles. Bubble, rumble, squeak, squish, ick… There are plenty of other divey joints around this new hood of mine; and I look forward to trying them all, but I won’t be making a return visit to J&Js.

alright — i returned with re-adjusted expectations and wanted to try a couple of the other things on the menu, and see if anything else was better. I had a cheeseburger — i’d say it got a solid 3 stars, and the service is very good. fast and nice people I have been in a few times for the breakfast — definitely enjoy. i usually carry out and take it home for the family. good stuff. the breakfast platters are good — eggs, however you want, ham or sausage or bacon, home fries(that are actually super), and toast. I would think that i wouldn’t like this, but they serve the home fries with ketchup already on, and the toast already with jelly. like i said, i’m surprised, but i love this touch. i’ll be back often still want to try the bulgogi!

I’ve been to this sandwich shop several times over the last year. I keep pulling for it but breakfast At this shop just doesn’t measure up. My breakfast sausage and egg sandwich seemed a little bland and lifeless. The link sausages were limp and had no snap. When I bit into them|: at one point I thought, My God am I eating plastic? this sandwich really only took on flavor after I bathed it in ketchup and hot sauce. At that Point it was ok, but that’s the problem, if you want just ok you can go to the 7 – 11 which is right next door I wanted to love this place, but it just doesn’t do it for me. In fairness, I have only tried their breakfast selections. I plan to go back and try the fish, but for now it is a 2.5 for me

I ordered a fish sandwich. The only thing that made it a sandwich is the two pieces of wonder bread between the fish. However, the batter the fish is fried in is excellent. I also tried the potato salad, and that was ok. I will probably come back next time I’m craving fried food.

A great fan of fried fish here. Tried fried fish from chain stores, ethnic markets, etc. And this is one of the greatest fried fish I’ve ever had! It’s not a fillet, but more like half of a whiting fillet. Fried chicken is close to Chinese style — no batter just deep fried. Bulgugi burger is not that amazing. I would go just for their fried fish and chicken platter.

Do not let the poor décor scare you away. This place had the best fried fish I have ever had! Don’t bother with the tartar sauce, the fish is delicious without it! Very inexpensive, neighborhood joint with really great food. My kids had the chicken fingers and the meat looked like great quality chicken breast. We were headed to Mount Vernon by Metro and Bus, and needed a quick lunch first. This place is about a block away from the Huntington Metro station(staying right as you walk down the hill from the station to get onto Huntington road, and take a right onto Huntington). The neighborhood looks like it might not be great, but I walked from the station with my 2 kids, and although I probably looked a little out of place, everything was fine, and no one gave us a second glance.(I’m sure I looked like a tourist!- 3 blondes walking into an ethnically diverse area). I only have great things to say about this place!

This is a no-frill, no-nonsense ma & pa shop, that features all your good hearty fried foods. Their fried whiting is amazing — it’s all greatly battered up and nicely fried, and their nice homemade tartar complements it well(kind of like the sauce for coleslaw). I usually forego their sides, and just double up with the kimchi(yes, they have kimchi; the owners are Korean, and it is well-fermented kimchi — veryyy tasty!). Their bulgogi is more on the sweeter version(but, wasn’t a fan), their fried shrimp is amazing(so crispy!(, wings are okay(but for myself, not a fan; other people seem to enjoy it with the mumbo sauce), burgers and the ribeye steak sandwich are good(but on the salty side), and their homemade sweet tea is oh-so-sweet and refreshing! The owners are so incredibly sweet, and they get their regular customers. You can see this place packed during the lunch rush, and there are a lot of people who do carry-outs. Parking is a breeze, and if the spaces are all taken, just go over to the other lot that’s abandoned. The place is in a little plaza off of Huntington. +great kimchi! +fried shrimp! +sweet tea(homemade)! +friendly couple! :D

This shop sits on a jacked up parking lot in a strip mall between a 7 – 11 and a Salvadorian/Guatamalean restaurant. You’ll notice the strange yet subdued seemingly harmless old guys that walk around the parking lot or sit on milk carton boxes leaning against the buildings. But don’t let that bother or deter you from checking it out. The place is ran by a Korean family, the food here is cooked to order. Big fan of the fried fish(whiting) and chips tray with creamy homemade tarter sauce but not so much of the Bulgogi sub. This batch was a bit bland so I was disappointed after reading the 3 reviews of how good it tastes. Even the tiny mom and pop ran Korean food cart in downtown DC on 14th and K Sts has more flavor with the traditional soy, ginger, garlic, sesame oil marinade. Aside from that, ask for a side of their kimchi. It’s served in a small styrofoam cup, filled with the crispy snap of fermented cabbage and slivers of radish. I’m not sure because I didn’t ask but that’s probably homemade. Thumbs up overall and will keep this place on the radar when I’m feenin’ for some kimchi and don’t want to make a run all the way over to LA Mart.

J & J is a true hidden gem. They have amazing subs and breakfasts. I have been a few times now and every time they didn’t disappoint! This place is definitely a no frills hole in the wall that looks like it has been around for a long time. It has plenty of seating if you have a desire to eat there. Every time I have been, there has always been what seems to be a long time customer ordering or waiting for something. It is a locals spot for sure. My favorite so far is their bulgogi sub. I love me some good bulgogi and they have it! They will even make you a platter with kimchi(not on the menu) if they have it. I have also had a really great breakfast sandwich and my husband really likes their steak and cheese. Their fried items seem to be popular with others who I see ordering. Tip: It usually takes a few minutes to get your food so if you’re in a hurry you are better off calling ahead.

J & J Sandwich Shop, 2303 Huntington Ave, Alexandria, VA, They were good many many years ago, at least 15years ago. I guess a couple people have got lucky with their choice of food and liked. My co-workers had something different, they were satisfied. The original owners were good, the food was fresh and tasty, and reasonable for the amount you were served. It was a little ma and pa type of establishment. But, the place has gone downhill fast. I wanted to give them a second chance; UGH! I ate there recently, I had a fish sandwich. I thought I detected a very fishy smell. My first instinct was to throw it away. But, I nibbled, and could not stomach the rest. There were about 3 little pieces of nugget-like fish on two pieces of bread. That was a big mistake; later in the day, a few hours later, I got so sick. I have never in my lifetime, experienced such a deathly ill feeling. After a day of wishing I had never taken a bit of the fish, my day ended in the emergency room. I researched the sandwich shop and, I noticed they have had many health inspection violations. Be careful, where you eat seafood, in fact just don’t eat there, if you do, you are taking a big risk. Seafood poisoning is the most deadly of all food poisoning as many of you know. The food is cheap, but the price you pay after consuming contaminated fish, is not worth the money you save to get a cheap meal. No Thanks J J.

I was first skeptical trying this place out but to my surpise this place is amazing. This hidden gem is best described as a Ma and Pa joint. As you enter you are greeted by the friendly korean owners. The menu offers many varieties. anything from american, southern cooking, and korean cuisines. The first thing that caught my eye was the bulgogi sub. The meat was sweet, tender, and delicious. I also ordered the fried fish with the best ever homemade tartar sauce. If you don’t like fish wait till you try J&J’s fried fish it will surely make you change your mind. It’s fried to perfection and when you eat it with the tartar sauce it’s just heavenly. I have not yet got a chance to try their breakfast but I’m sure it’s wonderful. If you happen to be around the area I highly recommend taking a few minutes to order something to go or dine in. You won’t be disappointed.
