SO. GOOD. I’m probably biased since I grew up on a variety of Mediterranean foods, but that also makes me VERY picky about it. Taverna gets my approval! Everything tastes very fresh when I go there, and I’ve never had service issues. Once I ordered the Horiatiki salad to go, and the portion was distinctly smaller than what I normally get in my restaurant version, but that’s a minor complaint. I’ve sat both inside and out, love their cute garden patio in the back. You almost forget you’re in a city back there, it’s very quaint. I didn’t even know there was a Sunday brunch, adding that to the list for next time :)

I lived on the island of Crete for 3.5 years and not only fell in love with the people, but the food as well. I will say that this is by far the best Greek food that you will come across here in the states. The atmosphere is just like a Greek Taverna(restaurant) back in Greece. And the food was fabulous. If your even thinking«should I try it», TRY it. I believe you will not be disappointed. And for the comment about the music being loud, well that’s Greek for you. The are loud and very passionate. Another reason why I love them so much.

BESTBEETSALADEVER! Delicious authentic fresh Greek food. Amazing environment and the owners are adorable! Nothing negative can be said about this restaurant. Everytime I have visiting house guests I bring them here, I’m never let down

This is my favorite restaurant in the DC metro region, and easily the best Greek restaurant. The service and the atmosphere are excellent, and this is the choice I would recommend if you are planning to entertain visitors from out of town or take someone on a nice date. The food is exquisite, so much so that we selected it for our Christmas dinner, which I picked up as take out on Christmas Eve. To my astonishment, the owner(I assume) went out in the cold, crossed King Street, and chased my daughter and me down just to give us a free dessert along with our order. I have never experienced anything like this, and since my thanks for such a generous Christmas gift seems inadequate I decided to write a Unilocal review, something I rarely bother to do. My best wishes to them for many years of prosperous business.

What happened to this place? Short and simple: — chicken kabob tasteless and boring — lamb shank covered in spagettios-esk sauce and overcooked horrible! — to top it off a waiter who sensed these people are not pleased. Tops off wine when it is already full and the ultimate faux pas. picks up the check before we leave. Boo, check off the list and won’t be returning here.

Its the BESTBESTBEST of Old Town Alexandria in a beautifully designed(indoor and outdoor) Greek restaurant. They treat you like family from the moment you walk in and offer the freshest food(salad, octopus, etc.) around. The service as great as the food which is awesome. The family feel comes from the actual owner, a very very nice reminds-me-of-my-Mom lady who treats you with the so much attention you feel like she’s going to come around to ask if you’d like seconds. She is so attentive. And her husband and co-owner is also managing the operation as well. Great place. If you’re interested in Greek and are in the area you will not miss.

I was skeptical beforehand(as I tend to be). Taverna Cretekou is the real deal. Gracious hosts from the very start, delicious food, warm hospitality, beautiful environment. Exceedingly kind to our kids. Love it.

I’ve been here several times and haven’t reviewed the restaurant. The owners and staff are very friendly. I was here on a date last night. We had wine and a few appetizers. Even thou the date was horrible, I still enjoyed the grape leaves and sautéed mushroom dish. I would like to see more vegetarian options added to the menu.

Food was absolutely delicious. Service was good and attentive. I like how the place is designed, like the plaster architecture of Santorini. They have a beautiful quaint garden outside eating area in the back. We had the lunch buffet, it had chicken, fixins for greek salad, grape leaves, veggies, hummus, tzaiki, etc., it was yummy. Will definitely be coming back.

This may not be a fair representation because I didn’t enjoy the food and I don’t know if it’s because the food is just not to my taste or they did not cook it well. I will write based on my tastes. I went in for a Sunday Lunch Buffet($ 18). They said there’s over«20 dishes» you can try so that won me over. However, most of the dishes were really salads. My evaluations: Best salads: beet salad and the potato & pea salad Dishes: steamed veggies were OK. steamed potatoes were super sour because of the lemon seasoning. Lamb was the only real meat dish there. There was a guy slicing the lamb and that was pretty good. They also had chicken kabobs but those were cold because they had been left out. It just tasted like chicken. The blanket statement here is that everything was super lemony tasting. All the veggies and meats and everything had an underlying taste of lemon. The staff was very friendly-it looked like a family run restaurant so I always want to support these. Unfortunately, this place just did not suit my taste. =(

We had dinner here last night 5 adults and a child. The service was great! Immediately offered soup for the child and promptly brining out bread(where’s the pita u ask. I’ll get to that). We ordered tzatziki, which came with no pita :(we then had to wait 10min for the pita to be warmed. The waiter recommended a mushroom filled with crab appetizer…the texture was mush! On nights that are getting cool please be mindful of patrons sittings near the rear door… why were waiters and owners going in and out every 5 minutes causing a draft! The entrees where a little bland and very over priced we felt. If it was based on the service we would be back but unfortunately the food wasn’t up to par.

I have been here a couple of times, the most recent was in mid-September on a date. I love sitting on the patio out back when the weather is nice, but the inside looks like it could be just as intimate on a cold winter night. The wait staff is great. They’re friendly and attentive, and happy to make recommendations about the food. The food is fabulous! The manager came around and asked how everything was. If you’re looking for a really nice Greek restaurant, this one definitely fits the bill!

Wow! This place is amazing! Great food, great service, and beautiful ambiance! I was looking for a place to have dinner in old town with outdoor seating and came across this place. The outdoor patio is beautiful, even though it was dark, there was lighting above the tables so you could see still everything. This was my first time eating at a Greek restaurant and I was a little nervous because I didn’t see anything that I was familiar with(besides kabob and hummus). Our waiter brought out warm bread and the green oil with garlic that they brought on the side was so tasty and flavorful. The menu has a good selection of mezedes(appetizers) and I love how they have a traditional section on the menu which goes back to ancient Athens(very cool), it just gave off an authentic touch. I decided to get the filo with stuffed spinach and feta cheese and it was delicious! I normally don’t like feta cheese but the combination of the spinach and the crispy filo made it phenomenal. My plate also came with some veggies as well as potatoes which were seasoned perfectly. Our waiter was so sweet and attentive and brought out our food fairly quick. I had a great experience and can’t wait to go back so I can explore the menu a bit more, and this time I’ll try going in the early evening so I can get a better view of the garden during the daytime.

The ambience of the back garden is phenomenal and the food is underrated. I had grilled octopus which was different but as you dig in, you will realize that the quality of the cook. Although the dish was very well seasoned you can still taste the freshness and the flavor of the octopus. The chicken soup not not good and I have had a much better flavored soup. As far as the chicken pita the meat was juicy and I mean the juice was flowing when I bite into it. The lamb shank on a pita was cooked just tender enough. It does not fall off the bone type of softness but it was just perfectly tendered. Over all, it must either be my lucky day or the food from this restaurant is severely underrated. Everything except for my soup was great! The ambience is superb, I can sit there with a drink and spend my entire afternoon in this place.

I love this place! Yummy eats – I recommend their musaka and sampler platter(which I don’t remember the name of but its so yummy). They also have great salads! The service is top notch and the ambiance in the outdoor garden is breath taking. I wanted to stay longer to just take it in.

The ambiance here is phenomenal, the food here is just good. Taverna Cretekou is a Greek joint in Alexandria. It’s quite nice both inside and out, and I highly recommend eating outside — the patio is gorgeous when the weather is good. The ambiance is thoroughly Greek despite the American stylings of Alexandria, which I very much appreciated. The prices are quite reasonable for the area, and service is excellent. The food here is good, but not unexpectedly so. I had the Soudsoukakia, which was very flavorful but perhaps a bit unexciting. The appetizer plate I had — basically a bunch of different delicious toppings on cucumbers — was equally good. I suspect that there are much better dishes than the Soudsoukakia, though I wouldn’t know what those are — the chefs certainly seem skilled, maybe I ordered wrong. All in all, a place with great ambiance but hopefully with more exciting dishes.

The spanakopita was much better than any I’ve had in a long time. The sampler appetizer was good but left you wanting more. Get extra bread and enjoy a good entrée. I look forward to trying the other dishes!

Decent Greek food, but a little pricey. $ 75 for lunch?(not counting tip). Just based on that, I doubt I will go again soon, as there are other Greek restaurants around I have bookmarked«to try». .But, I also do not have too many negatives to point out. Stuffed mushrooms were probably the lowest note of the meal: lacked flavor, which is difficult to achieve when there is feta cheese involved. Avgolemono soup was good, but not prefect like«Vasso’s»(see respective review). Saganaki was decent albeit a little greasy for me… but I am not a huge fan of saganaki(my date ordered it). Octopus, I had better, and I had worse. Their special for the day, avocado-crab salad, was delicious: the high note of the meal. The complimentary pita and herbed olive oil were also very good. Service friendly and attentive, especially before the party of 10 sat next our table. After that point, we were sort of left to our own devices. Décor? The typical Greek American restaurant column+statue+blue/white stuff) you will never find in Greek restaurants. If you are a local, you should try it if you have not yet. They have a lunch special for $ 13: it’s like a self-served(buffet) with soup, salad, and a main dish of the day.

I came in for lunch on a Sunday. They have a buffet for brunch but I went with the menu instead and ordered an open faced pita sandwich with slices of lamb roast and a delicious brown sauce. They had a nice little red by the glass that went well with the entrée and after I had a turkish cofee. I appreciated that the server explained the several different ways to prepare turkish coffee to make sure I was getting what I was looking for. Service was excellent and friendly. I came to this place a few years back with friends and had not been bqack since so it was nice to see nothing has changed as it was excellent both times.

Came here with my parents(in their 80’s) and wife. Found parking on the street right outside on a meter. Alexandria City stinks for meter parking which continues till 9:00pm so a lot of people have stopped coming into town for dinner in old towne The Resturant is quaint and at a quarter past 6 we had the place pretty much to ourselves. My mum has been here before and remembers it to be a good authentic Greek Resturant. We got Dino as our waiter. Very knowledgable and helpful with going over the menu) Everything sounded great. We ordered the appetizer sampler(try this for a good taste of various homemade dishes), Moussaka — ground sirloin and vegetables(heaven!) Mediterranean Seabass(decent but took time filleting table side as we had two orders one person had to wait) and sautéed flounder with artichoke(tried something different and should have ordered the lamb). Overall the place is worth a visit and stands up to their authentic billing. The four stars are actually a 3.75 from my group. But we will come back and try some of their other dishes (Kali orexi or enjoy your meal in Greek)
