I came here with high hopes. The ribs were good and the sauce was, as my wife says, tangy. The meat did not come right off the bone, but for the most part it was still tender. The chicken, though, was DRY. I was really disappointed with how dry the chicken was. I had to put a lot of sauce on it to make it edible. Overall, it was okay. But it didn’t live up to the hype.

We’ve dined on Whooly’s ribs for years. What I find amazing is the fact that he apparently does not season the meat, nor«smoke» supplements. He cooks over bags of Kingford and that’s it. The taste is based on the thousands of slabs he’s cooked over his pit. And the sauce? Fugggetabout it! My kingdom for his recipe. It’s an honor to have such a superb product just a few blocks from home.

Anytime I drive down Mt Pleasant Ave I always look to see if the smoke is rising up over the roof of the VFW. Whooley’s has been a staple in Ambler for years. I’ve stopped into Whooley’s many times over the years. The racks are large but the meat never falls off the bone. If it wasn’t for the 5 star home made sauce these ribs would be average at best. I believe Whooley has moved down south and some of his relatives are now cooking for him.

Whooley Whooley Whooley… What have you done to me… I have cravings that lead to dreams about this place. These ribs are sooo good! I live in California and I will be flying to Philly just for these ribs… oh and to see the family too… almost forgot about them ;-D The special home-made sauce they use really put the cherry on top. I cannot wait to get a slab… or two.

I’ve only had the ribs once. They were so good, I am promising myself I will get back there on a Friday or Saturday before the school year starts. I really want to try the other things(such as the Turkey leg) they cook up. The sauce on those ribs. Damn.

My fave ribs in the Philly area. The turkey wings are excellent as well, but are only occasionally available. Located behind the VFW on Fridays and Saturdays when the weather permits.
