Wow, they have the best all meat Chicken Pies, homemade Chicken Soup, and Chicken and Noodles you’ll ever get! There are some great pastries as well. There usually is a line and hence a little wait around lunch and dinner times with folks ordering and picking up «To Go» . You can always sit down and enjoy old fashion full service as well. I prefer the food to go though. You can even take home pies unheated with gravy on the side to eat another day. I am sure glad this place is still around. I have been going there for over 30 years!

I am so disappointed that the store closed. I’ve been going here since a young kid and there is NO place that has chicken noodle soup and pot pies like this place. Every Christmas we would make a trip to buy pastries and soup for Christmas. Now… where and who is going to carry on this delicious food recipes for the people that loved the restaurant so much. I am soooooooooo sad.

RIP Otto. I am saddened to learn of Otto’s death. I couldn’t agree more with previous reviews, particularly D.L. Ditto. I enjoyed the wonderful food and local family hospitality there for over 40 years. Funny, but I really loved how the place seemed frozen in time… same busboy… who never seemed to age. But I gotta say yuck to those awful vinyl seat coverings haha. Please, please, reopen with a commitment to the same food and bakery.

This was one of the best places to eat at in the West Anaheim area. Sorry it’s closed… reasonably priced, good comfort food. I’ll miss it…

As I was unaware at the time of my last post, apparently the restaurant was abruptly closed due to a death in the family. I am so sorry for the lose, and would like to update my review accordingly, as it seems as if my experience was circumstantial, and I certainly am not trying to ruin a legacy here. I only wish I could have tasted one of these delicious pies before it closed.

RIP Otto. Thank you! You and your business were and hopefully will continue to be Orange County icons! The Five stars are for the decades of consistently great comfort food and memories. .. Thanks again, Otto! I certainly hope the restaurant re-opens soon and when all are ready!

Despite growing up in the general area, it took a long while before I discovered this restaurant — as an adult, actually. I love the classic signage and the vintage bakery and the small town service you get in this place. When you step through the doors of the La Palma Chicken Pot Pie Shop it’s like you step into to a better place in time. I hope the La Palma Chicken Pie Shop place reopens. I called the number today and it’s disconnected, which seems to be a bad sign. I hadn’t heard that the owner had passed on until I came to Unilocal to get the number to see if they were open on Labor Day.(I wanted to treat one of my old high school friends to this place, thinking that she may have not yet discovered it, either.) I do hope that the restaurant reopens, as I am sure it would honor the owner’s memory and legacy to keep it up and running. Running a restaurant is a big commitment, however, and it will no doubt be difficult to fill the owner’s large shoes. Still, as a veritable landmark, I hope they find a means to pull it off. If and when the restaurant does reopen, I hope the food and the bakery remains exactly the same but the seats are reupholstered. My only real gripe with this place was the condition of the booths, a number of which have sprung springs that are uncomfortable to sit on, which is the only reason why I have deducted one star from this review. Make no mistake, however: The food and the prices, however, are fabulous. This is comfort food like no other chicken pie shop can match. I only wish I would have reviewed The La Palma Chicken Pie Shop favorably on Unilocal much sooner.

I am very sad to hear that Otto, the owner has passed away. I was just here 2 months ago and he rang me up at the register. The La Palma Chicken Pie Shop always gives such wonderful service, sumptuous food, and a great value for your dollar. I hope that everyone who reads this will go out and support the chicken pie shop as soon as it opens again. RIP Otto.

RIP Otto. After a couple recent trips finding the place closed I sadly learned that La Palma Chicken pie shop’s hard-working owner has died. The La Palma Chicken Pie Shop, a local landmark since 1955, closed its doors after the death of owner Otto Hasselbarth. Calling Otto a workaholic might be an understatement, he put in 12 hour days, six days a week. Hasselbarth would come in early, around 4 a.m., because he did all the baking, He’d go home to nap for about three hours mid day and return around 1:30 p.m., working till 8 p.m. close. He did that for 43 years. The local eatery, known for its chicken pies and noodle soup, took patrons back in time, with its retro light-up chicken sign and burnt orange naugahyde booths and chicken motif. Still many restaurants have come and gone in the 60+ years this one has been around. Just goes to show that a mom n pop place with its attention to detail, love, sweat and customer care really goes a long way. I’ll miss ya Otto. The LPCPS was my first ever ROTD and holds a place dear to my heart and stomach. They and will be sorely missed by me and many others. However neighbors say the restaurant is expected to reopen. I’ll keep my fingers crossed and be first in line. RIPOTTO

Patronizing this establishment is probably the closest I will get to the experience of opening up a time capsule. Almost everything in this joint(the light fixtures, the art work, the booths, the counter …) looks like it was directly transported to modern day from 1974. I loved it! After marveling over the above-described, and also realizing that I was at least 15 years younger than any other customer, I had a chicken pot pie lunch. It came w/a roll, mashed potatoes and side salad. All of this cost me $ 5. No, that is not a typo. The chicken pot pie was really satisfying. Plenty of tender chicken contained in a flaky crust exterior. Despite the appearance in the pictures you’ll see posted here on Unilocal,I didn’t find the gravy to be overly heavy or greasy. Just really tasty! I travel down to Orange County for work at least twice a month, and as a result of the lunch I enjoyed today, I have a new regular location I’ll be visiting for lunch on the trips back.

This place gives you so much food for less than $ 10 a person. Soup, side salad, entrée w/side, dessert Seriously? How do they stay open? The fried chicken was great! Super crispy in the inside but pretty moist inside, I was pleasantly surprised. The pot pie was great as well with lots of real shredded chicken. Our waitress was a little older lady but super attentive and great as well. This is what comfort food is!

«Babe, if we can’t solve any problems Why do we loose so many tears Whoa, so you go again When the leading man appears Always the same things But can’t you see we’ve got everything Going on and on and on And everytime you go away You take a piece of me with you And everytime you go away You take a piece of me with you, you» Hall & Oates wrote the tune, but Paul Young made it famous by covering it on his Secret of Association album in 1985. The song — «Every Time You Go Away» became a smash hit and today, the La Palma Chicken Pie Shop was playing this ballad over their radio system thru K-Earth 101. It was a pleasant afternoon and this jam fit the personality of this vintage restaurant in Anaheim. Inside, the place looks like a timeless wonder, right down to the booths and servers. Doesn’t seem like much has changed, including the loyal customers that frequent this place. After my check in, Unilocal friend Naomi T asked me if I was the youngest one there and she was exactly right. Well, youngest and Asian, if you want to be more precise. CHICKENPOTPIE For a measly 5 bucks, you can have a serving of their Chicken Pie(white or dark meat), which comes with your choice of cole slaw or crisp salad, whipped potatoes, hot roll and butter. Much to your delight, they generously pour gravy all over the pie and potatoes. As many of you claim, the portions are small, but for anyone who doesn’t eat too much in one sitting, it shouldn’t bother you one bit. Their menu is quite simple and cheap, so you’re not going to spend a ton of money here. They even have their popular specials set at a lower price, which consists of Short Ribs of Beef, Corned Beef and Cabbage, Chicken Fried Steak & Gravy, Breaded Beef Cutlets & Gravy, Liver & Onions, or Breaded Filet of Sole — all for $ 3.85 each. They might as well just give it away. To sum it up, it’s just wholesome comfort food. Think Roscoe’s House of Chicken & Waffles, but more American style rather than Soul Food. The menu says it all, so take a moment to ponder on the selection. I was really impressed with their Chicken Noodle Soup and their Blue Cheese dressing, which according to my waitress, is a homemade recipe. TIP — check out the baked goods in the front, along with their freshly baked pies and cakes. If you’re out of CASH for tip and using your charge card, make sure to add gratuity to the total, before you ring your check at the front register. CHRISEATSHERE who you calling chicken? series

Rustically a comforting place to dine in. When you need a break from the monotony of chain restaurants and the hullabaloo of Friday night traffic on Euclid Street, you may want to drop by the La Palma Chicken Pie Shop for sweets or other eats. Mother has been buying us chicken plates from here since 1996. You would think I would have dined in sooner, after all these years. But lo and behold, my first time eating inside was 6 days ago. Our server kept calling me baby, which I found to be totally endearing and funny. And though we stuck out like sore thumbs, in a small sea of dining seniors, we also felt right at home for some reason. I ordered meatloaf and mashed potatoes which was not the best choice. But that’s what I deserve for wanting to be different lol. The husband got the fried spring chicken and this was the usual utter greatness! $ 6.85 for each of our menu selections, salad + entrée + dessert, we couldn’t go wrong. Just remind me to stick to the chicken dishes okay?!

Time warp! It was like going to a diner before I was even born. Vinyl covered booths, laminate covered tables… they should have filmed Back to the Future here. I ordered the chicken pot pie lunch, which came with a small cup of soup or a salad, and a small dinner roll. The soup was delicious, recommended by the waitress. I was thinking that it was going to be a clear broth soup, but I was wrong. It was a cream of chicken soup, nice and thick, with a generous amount of noodles. That by itself was filling. When I was done with the soup, the very attentive waitress brought out my meal and snagged my drink cup and refilled it. Nice! I didn’t even ask. The pot pie was small, probably around six inches in diameter, but it was stuffed with tender pieces of chicken. Only chicken, no potatoes, carrots, or other fillers. Along with the side of mashed potatoes, this was a very filling lunch for only $ 5. Wow! This place is a little divey, so why the four stars? It’s really for the price of the food. I would definitely come back here if I was in the area!

Ever wanted to take a trip back to the past? Well visit here! The place reminds me of a roadside diner of the 60’s, that hasn’t remodeled since. It’s old and worn, like grandma’s house. The food all looks to be from scratch, homemade, with visual imperfections. I kind of like it like that, food with character. As for the service, it’s no-nonsense, take it as it is. Regarding the food, it’s not over the top goodness, like Mayberry-ish. Thumbs up, Andy Griffith style. But as always, let me know what you think.
