I saw this place a few doors down from the Starbucks on Dimond and Old Seward in a small strip mall and I was curious to try it out. Before Sparta Pizza, this place used to be Sorrento’s Pizza back in the 90’s. The restaurant itself has a very small seating area with sports playing on a TV in the corner but most customers usually place an order for pick-up or delivery. The woman behind the counter was friendly but also overwhelmed between phone orders and pick-ups. It would probably help to get another person behind the front counter for the dinner rush to ease her workload and shorten the wait time for customers picking up food. Sparta’s has a good selection of pizzas, Greek dishes, and Philly Cheese steaks on their menu. I decided to get the Philly Bomb Cheesesteak which had sliced top sirloin, Swiss cheese, Geneva salami, onions, green peppers, mushrooms, and black olives on toasted Italian bread. I only had to wait for about ten minutes for the food to arrive which was pretty good considering how busy they were with phone orders. The Philly sandwich was humongous with lots of cheese and grilled vegetables. This was delicious with the lightly-toasted bread and the crispy crinkle-cut fries on the side. Some of the other cheesesteak selections include the Philly Pepperoni with a generous amount of pepperoni added with Swiss, and the Pizza-Steak with red sauce. The pizzas are made either traditional or Greek style. Some of the notable ones are the Gyro Pizza(garlic butter, gyro meat, fresh tomatoes, mushrooms, onions, feta, and mozzarella cheese topped with cucumber sauce), the Mama Mia(pepperoni, Canadian bacon, Italian sausage, fresh tomatoes, mushrooms, onions, green peppers, and black olives with a thick crust and extra cheese), and the Chicken Ranch(grilled chicken, parsley, fresh tomatoes, red onions, mushrooms, feta, mozzarella cheese, and ranch dressing). They also have a good variety of Greek dishes that include Moussaka(layers of eggplant, potatoes, and ground beef topped with Béchamel, a white sauce), the Spanakopita or Spinach Pie(sautéed spinach, onions, and feta cheese wrapped in filo pastry), and the Sparta Calzone(filled with gyro meat, mushrooms, onions, feta, ricotta, and mozzarella served with marinara sauce). Greek cuisine is one of my favorites and I plan on coming back to try out their Moussaka but with the small seating area, take-out or delivery is the way to go.

Looking for fast, hot, and delicious food brought to your door? This place delivers! Few others on Diamond Blvd are so consistent. The Greek food is surprisingly on point and the pizza is great. These use less sauce than most pizza places but it seems to balance out just right with the soft yet crispy crust and abundance of cheese. I’ve had at least 30+ deliveries from Sparta and only one off experience. That’s solid odds!

I was very excited to read that they used«real gyro meat cut from a spit, etc» I went in and ordered a regular Greek gyro — brought it home and then was very disappointed to find the meat very dried out and tough — the yogurt sauce was excellent and the pita bread delicious — but in the end — just did not add up– especially paying $ 11. I even phoned in the next day to give them an honest review — I don’t think they cared. Won’t be returning. Dang.

The pizza itself tasted okay. The pizza had slid at some point and all the cheese and toppings had moved drastically off the top. I ordered a drink as well and my can smelled like smoke along with the pizza crust. My delivery driver smelled of smoke of course and it’s almost like he smoked in the car on the way over. I dumped my pizza and soda, and they wouldn’t even refund me.

Usually great food but brought the pizza home it was burnt, crust was hard and missing pineapple on the Hawaiian. Called and nicely let them know and the lady was extremely rude. Was also rude when I ordered the first time. Pizza usually 5 stars, but customer service/phone skills are terrible.

Got a couple options for delivery last nicht; the spinach calzone and the classic gyro. Gyro was not thinly sliced like I like, but had great tzatziki sauce. That was the highlight of that meal. I did like the flavor of the meat though. Didn’t enjoy the freedom fries. When I tried to swap them out with a salad chick on the phone apologized but said they don’t like to do that. Not sure who they are. The spinach calzone was pretty tasty. One critique would be to cut up the spinach first, though I’m pretty happy they use real spinach and not the frozen variety. This place is a-ok for the two mentioned items. I will call again for delivery.

I’m disappointed to have to downgrade a review for the first time ever. The last two times my husband and I have ordered from Sparta, the service has been lacking. Tonight we ordered our pizza and the gal on the phone was downright surly. I’d like to give her the benefit of the doubt and perhap she was just having a bad day, but no one likes to have someone else’s bad day taken out on them, least of all me. Delivery took an average amount of time, but this is the second time the driver couldn’t find our place. Last time it took an hour and half and four phone calls to direct the driver to our home. It’s not as if we live in the boonies or new construction. Our home has been on the maps for 30 years, on a major road, and I always make sure to give the cross streets, but they still get it wrong. Then let’s talk about the pizza… It’s gotten bad. The crust was mealy, the sauce was watery, and everything was super salty. Plus, all the toppings had slid and congealed to one side of the pizza. I am really sad that this once tasty, locally-owned pizza place has let itself slide so much. Until they can get their act together it looks like I’ll be picking up Papa Murphy’s.

This is the ONLY place in Anchorage that I have found that serves real gyro meat. By real, I mean meat that is not pressed into a long rectangle shape by a machine. Gyro meat is supposed to be roasted on a spit and sliced off as needed. Best Gyro in Anchorage! Greek salad is also good with huge chunks of feta, meats olives, tomato.

We have ordered the gyro pizza a couple of times and it is magnificent. A thick tzatziki sauce lays atop the pizza with fresh tomato slices strategically placed for ideal bites. Being that we live on the east side, delivery time is usually over and hour, but so far it’s been worth the wait. The chefs mistake is also delish, will update if anything changes. Overall: check it out, it’s not a huge business but worth a try.

Ordered a gyro and the meat looked like it was deep fried. We also ordered 30 wings which should of been $ 25 but since we ordered 2 different flavors(hot and mild) they charged us for 15 wings twice $ 36. I’ve never heard of a place that wont mix and match flavors on wings. They ended up refunding us for the gyro but not the wings.

So far the best philly I have had. Every time I go I don’t ever be disappointed or left hungry. The chicken wings are a bit pricey but they are worth it. Haven’t tried the pizza there yet. I have it 4 stars coz sometimes the fries are soggy by the time I get in when I do delivery. Other then that… Spartas is the way to go for a good Philly!

Why these people have good reviews, I don’t know. I just ordered a gyro sandwich w/fries for lunch. The fries obviously came from a frozen bag and were soggy with no flavor. The sandwich’s bread was soggy and the meat was dry and flavorless. I also asked for no onions and of course, there were onions. What a waste of money. I will never eat here again.

I only make reviews if I am really impressed or really disappointed usually. This place is definitely the former, delicious food, very fast delivery and reasonable prices. I usually get the Greek gyro when I order, out of this world gyro meat and very fresh. The chicken wings are also very good. Haven’t had a bad thing from here. Best of all there is no minimum so you can order a quick lunch for about $ 11, don’t forget to tip on small orders though! I usually end up spending $ 15 including tip as get a very satisfying meal. Keep up the good work!!!

I had the Gyro and Baklava, they were both very delicious, and good portions. The couple next to me were having a pizza and they seemed very happy.

The Sparta special is no joke — pepperoni, italian sausage, fresh mushrooms, and green peppers; 18 bucks for a large, and will definitely fill you and a coworker up. Delivery is fast, and courteous as well. If you like Milano’s, give this place a shot as they are both owned by the same guy.

«THISISSPARTA!!!» Well, at least Sparta Pizza. I was exploring Anchorage, and was starting to get hungry when I saw their sign. Sparta Pizza, Philly’s & Greek Specialties. Ilve always been a fan of all three, so I figured it was worth a shot. It was inside a little strip mall, and only has about 4 – 5 tables inside, but the place was clean, and you could see most of the kitchen from where I ordered at the counter. Menus were the trifold paper ones, and entrees and pizzas started about $ 10. Most things were about there with the most expensive being one of the pizzas that was $ 23 for a 16″ so not to bad price wise. I went simple on the meal, and order a lamb gyro without any changes. Took about 8 minutes(I was the only customer at the time) and came out so hot I had to eat the fries first. It was good, and I think they make their own Tsatsiki sauce. Service was non existant aside from the food delivery, but I didn’t need anything so no big deal. Over all a good experience, and I’ll be back another time to try a philly…
